This is probably the record of his arrival in America. He lists his destination as Nebraska City.
Name: Martin Jansen Gender: Male Age: 38 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1842 Date of Arrival: 6 Sep 1880 Vessel: Moravian Search Ship Database: View the 'Moravian' in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database Port of Arrival: Quebec, Quebec Port of Departure: Liverpool, England; Londonderry, Ireland

Do you know if he was going to meet some one. He is a little difficult to find in the 1900 US Census. |

Thanks a lot! This is great news!
Unfortunately I have no more info on his journey to America. I have some more info on his family in Norway though, if it is of any help? |

Hi,
Some might help In particular, do you know of any other relatives of his who came to US, his generation or later? When did his parents and siblings die?
His arrival in Aug 1880 means he's too late to be in the US Federal census of that year, so its a long 20 years til the next surviving whole country census taken in 1900.

Hi Jackie!
Thanks again for your reply,
Martin was the son of Jan Johansen Strandbakken (1801-68) and Kristine Tjøstølsdatter (1814-79)
I'll be back with details on his siblings, there is a possibility he may have used Sletta, Holter or even Holtersletta/-en as surname. (other farms he lived on)

You are correct, here is the record for Petter. Ole and mother are right below Petter. You mention that they were log drivers. What does a log driver do. Nebraska is for the most part an agricultural state not a logging state. Maybe they moved up to Montana?
Name: Petter Bredman Gender: Male Age: 19 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1861 Date of Arrival: 6 Sep 1880 Vessel: Moravian Search Ship Database: View the 'Moravian' in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database Port of Arrival: Quebec, Quebec Port of Departure: Liverpool, England; Londonderry, Ireland

Thanks!
A log driver (tømmerfløter) floats timber down the river.
I have found Martin's siblings:
Anne, b 1845 No details after 1875 Gjertrud Marie 1851-1917 (died from tyfoid fever) Brede, (1854-1936) |

Hi
Martin's town in the directory is given as Syracuse. It appears to be in the center part of Otoe County,
http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ne/topic/resources/OLLibrary/Maps_Atlas/1885_Atlas/maps/otoe.jpg
And here is a person listed as a volunteer to search all sorts of Otoe County records:
SYRACUSE, NEBRASKA and Otoe County Linda Worrall PO Box 388 Syracuse, NE 68446 402-269-2303 e-mail: lworrall728@hotmail.com Experience in genealogy research for 7 years. Graduate of "American Genealogy: A Basic Course" from the National Genealogical Society. Member of the National Genealogy and Nebraska Genealogy Societies. Taught beginning genealogy classes, computer experience in research and family tree programs, have done research for other families for 2 years. Have knowledge in courthouse records, newspapers, mortuaries, cemeteries, church records, census, etc., and will research all sources for Otoe County.
If we are unable to generate records you may want to give Linda a whirl....

Here is a candidate for your Martin Jansen. Postive is that he is named Martin Jansen and he immigrated in 1880. However as you can see he is living in the Chicago Illinois area not Nebraska and his birth year is way off. However 1900 is twenty years after his arrival so perhaps his life had changed.
Name: Martin Jansen Home in 1900: Worth, Cook, Illinois [Blue Island, Cook, Illinois] Age: 60 Birth Date: May 1840 Birthplace: Norway Race: White Gender: Male Immigration Year: 1880 Relationship to head-of-house: Servant Father's Birthplace: Norway Mother's Birthplace: Norway Marital Status: Single

Perhaps the above Martin Jansen died in 1930. Here is a death record from Cook County, Illinois.
Name: Martin Janssen Death Date: 6 Jan 1930 Death Location: Cook County, IL File Number: 6001309 Archive collection name: Cook County Genealogy Records (Deaths) Archive repository location: Chicago, IL Archive repository name: Cook County Clerk
There is a second Martin Janssen that shows up in the death records, dieing in 1940, but he apperars to have been born in 1889 in Germany and immigrated in 1913.

Jackie, I wonder if your Martin Janssen is the same as the Martin Jansen found in the 1900 US Census from Blue Island, Cook County. I cannot find any Martin Janssen or Jansen or Jensen or other variation in Ogle County in the 1900 US Census. Ogle and Cook are separated by two other counties so it may be a stretch. |
