I need some help tracing my husbands line. He's from Minnesota, and I have been able to trace back to Engebret Ellefson, B. 1848 in Norway. According to the US census for 1880, he was in Goodhue, Minnesota, in 1980 (at this time his oldest child, is three and listed as having a MN birthplace, so it's safe to say that Engebret was in MN as of 1877 at the latest.)

My issue is that no matter how hard I look, I can't find anything to tie Engebret to ANY other previous Ellefson, Ellevsen, Ellefsen, Olsen from Norway.

If there is anything anyone can think of to help I'd really appreciate it...I'm going nuts over this

Thanks.

Hello,

there are [at least] two possibilities of "Engebret Ellefson, born approx 1848 in the norwegian 1865 census.

One is in Næs, Buskerud, the other one in Aal, Buskerud.

Engebret Ellevsen, Næs, Buskerud

Engebret Ellefsen, Aal, Buskerud

That last entry that jwiborg just forwarded looks more and more interesting.
I checked the 1900 census for Goodhue County, Minn. (Roscoe township) - Engebret Ellefson is listed in that census as born in December of 1848 and immigrated to US in 1870. He and wife, Norway born Martha, have had five children - but only two are still living at home. A mother of either Engebret or Martha is living in the household in 1900 - her name appears to be something like Janika or Janina Ellefson, born Feb. 1820 in Norway - immigration year not entered on the page. (That looks like an interesting possible match to the mother listed in the 1865 Norwegian census link for Aal in Buskerud in the message above. The place listed for her birth in the census is probably referring to Granvin in Hordaland.)

Hi,
Janina Torsen, widow, 65 y, from Aal, Hallingdal (Buskerud), emigrating to "Zumbrota" [Minnesota] on June 9th, 1892: click here
Here is her Ellis Island manifest [line #805]. Name says Janine Thorsdatter (65), arriving June 25, 1892 from Christiania. Destination just says Minnesota.

The age doesn't fit exactly, but it must be her...

This could be Engebret's brother "Ole Ellefsen Wangen" emigrating to "Zumbrosa" [Zumbrota, MN(?)] on the 6th of March, 1885: click here

Regarding the 1880 Mn census, this "Thor Ellefson", could be his younger brother "Tore" [1865-census].

Thanks All!!!

I think we are on the right track, with the arrival of Engebret in 1870. This works out with the info that I already had. I had already printed up the entries from the MN 1880 census...Engebret's wife is Margaret Gunderson (Also the last name of the homeowner that Thor Ellefson boards at in 1880)

I am great for your assistance. I will do some additional research from this info. Thanks again for all of your help.

If I have any other questions, I'll know where to ask.

In the Minnesota Historical Society Death Index -

http://people.mnhs.org/dci/Search.cfm -

I found an E. Ellefson, born 1845, Norway, died 1906 in Lac qui Parle County.

Martha Ellefson, died 1932, Lac qui Parle County.

In searching byy mother's maiden name 163 Ellefson's came up. Couldn't make the direct links work.

All,

THANK YOU for all of your help. Based on the info that I had already and the info that you were able to provide, I showed my husband the details, and it confirms what he remembers. His Great Grandfather was Ole Ellefson, Son of Engbret and Janida. Engbret died in MN on 05/29/1939. He was survived by his wife and I think 8 children.

I was looking for the connecting piece for between the US and Norway for this line, and you all were able to help me connect it. Thanks so much...Now all I have to do is learn to read the Norwegian census...

Thanks again!!!!!
