I have done extensive research to find my g grandfather, Carl O. Johnson. He left Trondheim, Norway approximately May 26 - June 11,1873 on the ship "Tasso" arriving at Hull. He would then needed to boarded a ship from Liverpool to America on a corresponding ship. I haven't been able to locate what ship he traveled on. I would appreciate any advice or information on the name of the ship and where he landed. The next time I find him is teaching school in Argyle Township, Lafayette County, Wisconsin.

I could not find a Carl O. Johnson on the Emigrants from Trondheim database. It would help if you provided a link to the information.

The database indicates the shipping line the emigrant used. Taking that information, research on this site to determine the routes used by that line and it will point you to the ship's destination in America.

JoAnne,
Thank you for inquiry. I found my g grandfather, Carl O. Johans. through the Digitalarkivet: Emigranter fra Trondheim 1867-1930. Like I said he was a passenger on the "Tasso", leaving date of 10.06.1873, posttype # 12254. Hope this is helpful to you. Many thanks.

He departed from England, probably Glasgow on a ship belonging to the Anchor Line, and would probably have landed at New York. The emigration record says he had leper, which could have given him trouble passing the medical examination at New York (if there was one at that time). That would have been through Castle Garden in 1873.

Strangely, I was not able to find him at Digitalarkivet by searching for names containing "Carl" in 1873, I had to browse the pages from the closest number I could find.

This I am sure is him:

Arriving on the Anglia (White Star Line) ship on July 1, 1873, from Glascow:

Carl Johnson, 27 (correct age), farmer, steerage, no mention of any physical condition.

There is information and pictures on this site for the Anchor Line, the agent in Trondheim, H.H. Dahl and a picture of the Anglia!

He would have gone from Hull to Glascow. After the Castle Garden check-in, he would have taken a boat across the harbor to New Jersey to board a train to Chicago.

This passenger list can be rented at a local Family History Center.

Many thanks to all for your time and information. It took me over 2 years to find my g grandfather and I am sure I have the right person. In fact, I am now corresponding with a g grandson of his brother in Norway. But he had little information about my g grandfather. An archivist suggested looking in the Reknes Leprosy Hospital patient list because I had mentioned that he had a crippling of his hands and feet. So I knew he had leprosy. I found in the records of Reknes that his father died as a patient and also a younger sister. But amazingly he lived 30 years in America, married and had a family. I am tying up loose ends before compiling all the information on him. I really wanted to know the ship and where he came when coming to America. Again, thank you all for you help. I probably will be posting a notice soon trying to finish research on my g grandparents of my father. Cdahl

No, it is not White Star Line, but Anchor Line. Just going too fast.

The Emigratar from Trondheim states Anker line.

Hello Carl,

I was reading with interest the exchange you had with JoAnne.

I am interested in Knud Dahle, also a passenger on the "Tasso" leaving Norway in June 1873. Knud is listed in the Minnesota 1880 Census as arriving in 1873.

I am hoping you might have a DAHLE as a fellow passenger with your g-grandfather from England to New York.

Emigranter fra Trondheim 1867-1930
11.06.1873; Knud Dahle; Jordbruger(farmer); male; age 18; hometown Romsdalen; going to Chicago; agent: H. S. Dahl; line: Anker; ship: Tasso; freight: 43; 36; Meldt (reported to Army)

Look forward to your reply.

Hi Jo Anne,

THANK YOU very much for the quick reply !

There wouldn't be a patronymic with Knud's listing would there?
Just a bit more challenging to find him and his family in the Romsdalen, Trondheim area without one <grin>.

I was able to solve how he got from Norway to Minnesota from your exchange with Carl, complete with a link to a picture of the sailing vessel, SS Anglia. I especially enjoyed reading the expanded historical references at this website.

Some days, one gets very lucky doing genealogy research.

Knut Dahl (1853-1915), married Mary Finne in 1883, had 5 boys and settled in Goodhue County, Minnesota.

Once Again - Thanks!

Robert

My family and myself visited Norway this past July visiting the birth places of our ancestors. While visiting with new found family we have a question - My g-grandfather was Carl O. Johnson and I have the following information from the farm & family history of Syvde, "Bygedebok for Syvde", by Haakon M. Fiskaa. It states Carl's parents were Johannes Hansen Sætre (1816-1854) and Anne Christensdtr (Sandnes) (b. 1814) and was in 1865 staying at Ervik in Selje parish. Their children were: Severin Johannesen, b. 1842 in Syvde. Was in 1865 staying at Ervik in Selje parish; Hans Johannesen, b. 1844, died; Carl Johannesen (Johnson), b. 1846 (we have his birth year as 1847), emigrated to USA; Hans Johannesen Sandnes, b. 1849, died 1923 at Sandnes; Pauline Johannesdtr, b. 1852. Our question is: Can you find any information about Anne and her oldest son Severin after 1865 possibly in Selje parish? Did Anne remarry and did Severin marry and when did they die? The Norwegian family nor myself cannot find anything about them.

Severin was a servant at one of the Ervig farms in 1865.
Anne as a widow at Svedhaug in 1900.
