I am looking for info. on the Bottem Family. Thore Bottem was born 9/28/1845 in Norway, he married Gunhild Sather in 1878 in Cottonwood County, Minnesota. They moved to Holt, Marshall County, Minnesota in 1906. He died 3/13/1916 in Excel Township, Marshall County, Minnesota. I have info. on their children, but no more info. on where Thore came from or who his siblings or ancestors were. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

In the 1865 census this is a likely canidate for Thore living on the Botheimsløkken gard Click Here In the kirkebøker for Lesja it lists Thore as being born Sept 29 1845, being one day off would not be unusual Click Here The 1900 census lists him as immigrating in 1870. There is a bygdebok for Lesja that may have information that could confirm that this is the correct Thore. Carla

Thank you very much, I was at a complete lost and was really grasping at straws. I may be missing something, but when I click on the first "Click Here" above I don't see the info. you suggested would be there. The gardsnavn is "Stueflotten", or am I not reading it properly. In what fylke is the Prestegjeld "Lesja" located? |

As a kid, I was told by my father and grandfather that our name used to be “Bottemshloken,” but details were never offered. Nor was there ever written evidence, or any attempt to spell it. When I found your posting with the name “Botheimsløkken,” I couldn’t help wonder if there wasn’t a connection. Does anyone from the “Bottem Clan” have any insight? Any help will be appreciated!

Bottemsløkken farm is as said above in Lesja, Oppland county.
If you put up the names and birthyear you have of the oldest people in your family tree for Bottem, I'm sure there are people here who'll do their best to make a connection...

Im do not belong to the “Bottem clan”, but this may shed some light Since Lesja churchbooks now is available on internet they can be used to prove the informations in the 1865 census.
When the name Bottem was taken in the US, this was quite common – it was the name of main farm in Norway. Bottemsløkken and Bottemsbrækken were farms partitioned from the main farm. Godparents came from both these farms. Parents and residence are listed as Owner (of the farm) Ole Joh(annesøn) Bottemsløkken and wife (kone or hustru) Anne Thoresdatter
Their eldest son (Johnnes in the 1865 census) should have been Johannes (named after his fathers father) has not been found in the churchbooks of Lesja. Maybe he was born in another parish.
The son Thore (named after his mothers father) (21 years and shoemaker in the 1865 census) was born Sept 29 1845 and baptized Oct 19 in Lesja main church (LHK). Godparents were: Morten Tho(resøn) Bottem, John Ølstad, Johannes Ølstad Bottemsbrækken and Kari Bottemsbrækken
A daughter Guri (18 years in the 1865 census) was born Aug. 8 1848 and baptized Sept 3 in Lesja main church (LHK). Godparents were: Syver Rønningen ??,Jørgen Huslet, Marit J??datter Sillibakken, Brit O(lsdatter) Zveen and Kari Bottemsløkken
A daughter Mari (12 years in the 1865 census?) was born Febr 9 1852 and baptized at home by Martin Th(oresøn) Bottem the day she was born. A note in the column for godparents says “It died before the christening was confirmed in the church.” Strange, but a new Mari could be born a year later. |

Sorry, for the delay - I haven't checked the forum for sometime. Thank you very much, some of the dates I did not have. Yes, a second Mari was born 05 Oct 1854. But I have no further information on her after the 1865 Census. |
