I am looking for the Engen family who came form Holandsfjorden in Meløy, Norway. The went to Angus, Minnesota in 1892. Albert, Marie (Mary) and three boys, Lars, Johan and Nils.
They got four more children, Reinhard, Arne, Barthold and Aggie (Agnes).
Do anyone knows descendant or anything else about this family. Marie was a sister to my great-great-grandmother. |

My research shows my great grandfather and family moved to Minnesota around the same dates. My grandfather John lived in Warren Minnesota and was a farmer. His fathers name was Albert and his son's names match the ones you have listed. I did not come across any additional children's names. The family originated from the island of Meloy from what I can trace. But it is possible we are still talking about the same people. Please let me know if you would like to exchange any further information? |

A very good fit. Albert Larsen, wife Marie and three sons, Lars, Johan, and Nils arrived in 1892.
He is listed as a sailor from Melø and is traveling with family to Angus, Minnesota. Which is in Polk County. just south of Marshall County.
Albert Larsen in the New York, Passenger Lists, 1820-1957 Name: Albert Larsen Arrival Date: 9 Jul 1892 Birth Date: abt 1862 Age: 30 Gender: Male Ethnicity/ Nationality: Norwegian Port of Departure: Christiania Port of Arrival: New York, New York Ship Name: Island
A little odd that a family from Meløy would leave from Christiana. But his emigration record does list his residence as Trondhjem.

After clicking on one of your links, it appears we are discussing the same person. John A. Engen born May 4 1888 in Melo, Norway. I just assume they came from the island of Melo since I had no other information stating differently (meaning no information). Guess I'm possibly wrong about that location. John A. Engen was married on April 23 1927 in Warren, Marshall County, Minn. Angus, Polk County to Anna Marie Ordahl.
John's mothers name was Marie Jacobson? is what I have from a report listed in: Descendants of Osmund Larson ASE (1812-1904) and Siri Henriksdatter Eikelid (1819-1914) of ASE, Norway (formerly Aase). This information was collected from my grandmother's side of the family by one of their great grandsons. Since I have no living relatives except for my mother, it's been difficult to discover any further information about my fathers side of the family.
It looks like we a possibly related! My name is John Albert Engen |

It is very likely that your John A Engen is the same person as Johan Ålbertus born May 4, 1888 in Rødøy prestegjeld Meløy sokn Nordland fylke, Norway. Simple translation is Rødøy parish, Meløy sub-parish, Nordland county, Norway. So your Melo is likely a simplified possibly Americanized version of Meløy. Thus I think you have the location correct.
If you look at the original record under #27 link from above you can see the farm name Engen used along with the parents name Albert Larsen and Marie Jakobsdatter.
John's mother was named Marie Kjerstine Jakobsdatter or as you have phrased it Marie Jakobson born Oct 3, 1865 see link #85 above. . Her parents are Jakob Johannesen and Aasel Charlsdatter or also spelled Aasel Carlsdatter.
Jacob Mikael Johannesen and Aasel Margrethe Carlsdatter were married in Meløy Sep 8, 1844.
Jacob's father was Johannes Lorentsen and the father of Aasel was Carl Larsen
Original record
#2
So a question for you is who are Osmund Larson ASE (1812-1904) and Siri Henriksdatter Eikelid (1819-1914) of ASE, Norway (formerly Aase) |

Do you know Lars Nilsen Engen address in Trondhjem at that time or the location of the Fonnøren farm? Would like to use Google Earth to locate either location. I'm interested because my wife and I are traveling to both Sweden and Norway again next year. Last year we were able to locate the house where her grandfather and great grandfather lived before moving to the US in Sweden using Google Earth. We then traveled there and actually meant the current owner and collected additional information about her family. We are located in the San Diego area and if you would like to connect with me through email: johnengen@gmail.com Thanks for reaching out to me and looking forward to hearing from you again:) |

Osmund Osmundson Ose (1862-1952), son of Osmund Larson Aase (1812-1904) and Siri Henricksdatter Eikelid, was born on Aase farm near Aardal, Norway. He married Anne Danielsdatter (1865-1898), daughter of Daniel Ormson Oiehavn (1829-1896) and Anne Olsdatter Flathetland (1841-1907), in 1884 in Iowa. They had eight children. Includes Aase, Bottem, Egemo, Henderson, Johnson, Liden and related families. |

Thanks for the help. At this point unless I can discover any further information, I can safely assume that I have no living relatives on my fathers side of the family. After the new year I will begin researching about my grandmothers side of the family based on the information that was so kindly provided. Since my last posting I used 23&Me for my DNA testing. If any of you are using this service we can connect though it. |

John Engen: Robert Engen put me on to this tread just a few days ago and I realize it is a while since a new post has been made, so you possibly have all the answers. Anyway, you are on the right track and I am glad to provide some additional information. By way of introduction, I am the grandson of the brother to Marie Jakobsen and grew up in the municipality where both Marie and Albert came from. First a little bit about the name Meløen, Melø, Meløy. Going back to the late 1800 the current parish of Meløy was part of the Rødø or Rødøy parish. Today the parish of Meløy is congruent with the municipality of Meløy. References in records to where people came from will generally refer to the parish, municipality or city. Adding to the confusion is the fact that there is an island known as Melø or Meløya, which is the source of the name of the parish and municipality. However, neither Marie nor Albert came from the island of Meløy. Marie was born and raised on her fathers farm known as Sætvik, or Setvik in Glomfjord. Two of the siblings of Marie took the name of Setvik as their family name and the others used Jacobsen or Jakobsdatter as patrynyms were still in use towards the end of 1800. Albert came from the Engen farm in Holandsfjord in Meløy. The Engen farm is located next to the ocean and the lake fronting the Engabreen arm of the Svartisen glazier. I have the farm history books for Meløy and would be happy to share. If you use Google Earth and plug in "Setvika, Glomfjord" and "Svartisen Gård" you should come up with both locations. The Fonnøren farm that you ask about is just a mile away from the Engen, or Svartisen Gård farm.
