I am now researching information for my husband's family. Their name is Malmanger from Kvindherred, Hordaland, Norway. I cannot find the ship that Erik came on in 1901; also Johan in 1881 (I think). We have info that Johan was adopted by an Omvik family. We question if he came to America with the family and because he was only 10, for legal reasons they had guardianship of him? Is there a web site that I can locate information about the family in Norway? Thanks for your help. Carol |

Using the link Hopkins provided, Erik left Bergen around April 1, 1901, contracting with the Cunard Line. There is much information about Cunard on this site. They did not operate a direct Norway to North America route but left from Liverpool to Boston or New York.
On the Ellis Island database:
Erik Torjasen, from Christrd., age 20, arrived New York Harbor April 25, 1901 on the Teutonic from Liverpool. The Teutonic was operated by the White Star Line, not the Cunard.

Thank you for the information. I will be attending the Vestlandet Stevne held in Sioux Falls this week-end. Hopefully I will be able to research in the bygdeboker for the Kvindherred area. I know that there is a mountain at Rosendal named Malmanger Mountain. Is that where the Malmanger's orginated? Also, were the Omvigs neighbors of the Malmangers. Hopefully I will be able to locate a map of the area in the late 1880's. Carol |

Omvik and Malmanger farms are probably about 4 to 5 kilometers apart (estimated from a flat map). If you can look in the Kvinnherad bygdeboker - pick up book 3 of that series first. The Malmanger farm history starts on page 281 and the family is listed on page 290. They might have chosen to use the name Malmanger because that was the last place they had lived in Norway. Erik and Johan's father, Tore has family history tracing back to about 1645 on the Stuland farm (also in Kvinnherad and listed in book 3). |

We have family visiting from Norway and we are discussing family ancestry. We could use some help! Anne Solfrid is the daughter of Jakob and Esle Malmanger of Kvindherred. We are struggling to remember the names of Jakob's father's (Tore) siblings. My husband is the grandson of Erik Malmanger who emmigrated to America in 1901. We would really appreciate some history of this family. As previously stated we know that there was a Johan but we can't remember or know of the others. Many thanks.................... |

I may have Kvinnherad resources that can be checked -- but what time period are you talking about?
You need to provide vital dates for the persons you are talking about. A concise summary of what you already know please.
Has all this been done before and you've just misplaced your notes? If so, you can read through your previous queries here and rebuild your information. |

We are interested in the family of Thore Lars. (age 41 in 1865 censes) and Britha Kittelsd. (33 years in 1965 census). We would like names of Thor's parents, etc. Kittel Gunders. and Britha Anders. must be the names of Britha's parents. I will try to look in the church registers. No, the only info is from this forum. I have not been able to obtain the bygdeboke for this area. Also has this family always lived on/in Malmanger - Rosendal area? We've been working through Digitalarkivet this a.m. Also could I have help with Kittel Malmanger who took the name of Charles Malmanger in America. I find he is buried in Polk Co., Minnesota. He died at a young age. How did he die - accident or illness? |

I am digging deeper in the Malmanger family history and would appreciate your help. I have exhausted what I am able to find. I am looking for the parents of Thore Malmanger, b. Nov, 20, 1825. I think they were living in Kvinnhered, Hordaland, Norway at that time. I would like to know how many siblings he had and if any came to America, specifically Clinton County, Iowa. |
