I have a question that has been bugging me for decades (I'm in my thirties). It's simple really....does anyone here know the correct pronunciation of the name HAUGE?

Frighteningly, I know of several branches in our family that pronounce the name differently. Our branch goes by the pronunciation "Haig". Another branch goes by "How-gee". Another branch goes by "Hodge-ee". I'm sure there are others.

Does anyone know a link where I can get the "true" pronunciation of the name, or can someone lend some expertise?

It also depends on where in Norway your ancestors came from . There are many dialect variations, but I will say "how-gee" is far better than the other suggestions you have got!

My family were friends with the Norwegian Hauge family in Syracuse New York. I actually heard the name pronounced BOTH ways. I always call them "Haig" and I remember one of my family members call them Howga. I guess it's your choice! Mary Keys
