I'm trying to find information on Martha Synde or Soende. She was allegedly born in Valdres (? perhaps Sor-Aurdal parish ?), Norway in 1785 and died in Wisconsin (maybe near Mt. Horeb) in 1875. Soende, I believe, is her married name (husband Jorgen Soende). She was supposed to have come to the US in 1850 on the Freya (captained by Jens Walloe as listed on this site) but her name does not appear on the passenger list. Descendants of Martha Synde met together until at least 1938 as I have a 1936 photo labelled the Martha Synde Society and a genealogy made by Herman Loftsgordon in 1938. I would like to know if anyone has anymore specific information on Martha Soende, who her husband was, if she did come over on the Freya in 1850, where she was from originally and any other information relevant to her life.

She does not seam to have been on the Freya in 1850. It might help if you provide more information, like patronymic. Maybe you could try finding her in the 1801 Norwegian census, it is online and searchable at the Digitalarkivet. (See the link page)

Martha was baptised Sept. 12, 1784 at the Aurdal parish, Oppland County, Norway. You can see her baptism record at http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1450-kb20070603910527.jpg She married Jørgen Brynjulson Prestegaardens (1784-1838) on 2 Jan 1810. They had 6 children (that I know of) all of whom are baptised at the Nord-Aurdal parish. Anna 1812, Ingeborg 1815, Kari 1818, Niels 1822, Guri 1823, Juel 1826. I have found several confirmation and wedding records, but for the life of me cannot figure out where the Synde or Soende name comes in. There is no reference to that name in any of the records I have found- yet. At some point (after Jørgen's death?) the family moved to Sør-Aurdal, and that is the point they emigrate from. I have found an emigration record for daughter Kari and her family. Go to Oppland county, Reinli in Sør-Aurdal, Parish register (official) nr. 6 (1849-1876), Migration records 1849-1851, page 129. http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1450-kb20070207630233.jpg Record #17-23.

The baptismal record in a more readerfriendly version see 2nd entry on right page.
Her parents were Niels Jørgensen and Ingebor Olsdatter. Easier reading also in the 1801 census.

The marriage record in Nord-Aurdal is on the left page.

Jørgen was baptized Jan 25 1784, see 2nd record on right page. His parents were Brynjulf Torkelsen and Ane Knudsdatter, Præstegaards-eie.

Migration records with easier reading here.

The baptismal record for Anne Jørgensdatter is the 4th from bottom of right page. She was born at Præstegaards-eie Nov 19 and baptized Dec 6 1812.

Anne Jørgensdatter, then a widow, married Erich Nielsen Dec 28 1841, see #31.

Brynjul Torkelsen, wife and children living at home in 1801.

Jørgen was then a servant, he is Julsen (rather than Brynjulsen), see here.

Thanks for this information. Can you find the death record for Arne Nielsen Nordfjeld? I am wondering if Erich Nielsen Nordfjeld is a brother to Arne and married Arne's wife after his brother died?
