I am very new to Norwegian genealogy. It is my mom's line. I have been doing German genealogy, my father's line for about 12 years, so I know German script, but do not know any Norwegian

My ancestors from Norway were among the 5 Norwegian families to settle in Leer, Alpena Co, and Alpena, Alpena Co., Michigan in the late 1860's.

I found this forum by searching the internet for Lier to Leer.

On this site I found this answer:
You do not give many clues, but by searching the Digitalarkivet for emigrants out of Kristiania, I find 41 persons from Lier going to Michigan, mainly Port Huron and Alpena, where such info is given.

Børge Solem

I belive my ancestors are among these 41. I don't read Norwegian, and cannot figure out this Digitallarkivet site.

Can someone help me with these 41 people. Names I am looking for from Lier are Ottersen, and Olesen and Olsen.

I can provide farm names if needed.

Thanking you in advance.

Go here and do a search for Destination starting on alp.

You will get 111 hits, and almost all of them are from the Lier/Drammen area.

You can also do a search like this:
Residence contain lier and last name contain ot

That will give you 4 hits:

15.xx.1903 Karl Anton Ottosen Øverby (20) from Lier going to Wisconsin
06.03.1903 Svend Aamot (22) from Lier going to Minnesota
18.05.1906 Gunder Ottos. Lyngaas (17) from Lier going to Chicago
13.04.1928 Aagot Ottersen (b.08-sep-1907) from Lier going to Canada

Because the Oslo emigration are in two overlaping databases, you should check out the Christiania one also...

Hello Karen
I see you are serching for people from Lier, emigrating in the late 1860's.
I'm born and live in Lier, so if you could give me some names/farms to look for, I might be able to help you.
The "bygdebook" for Lier, which contains farm history is online at:
http://lier.kommune.no/liers-historie/
It's i Norvegian.

I also am interested in those who came from Lier to Leer, but only very limited information on my relatives on Leer, Mich as no one bothered to write down any history. If anyone could give me an idea of where to start it would be appreciated.
Thanks

The birth record for your great grandmother is #26 born Dec 7 1848, christened March 11 1849 in Sylling parish in Lier. Her parents were Ole Ottersen (you say Otter Olesen?) and Andrine Olsdatter, Kopperud.
Karens father Ole #49 was born June 1 1821 and christened June 17 at the Sylling parish. His parents were Otter Olsen and Kari Aagesdatter, Kopperud.
Karens mother, wife of Ole is #30 her name was Andrine born March 11 1819, christened April 18 in Sylling parish. She was an "uægte" child, i.e. born outside of wedlock, her mother was Kari Olsdatter, Svangstad and her father was Ole Hansen, Toverud.

Karens grandfather Otter Olsen was born May 9 1790 and christened May 23 in Sylling parish, see #63. there is no name of the son that was baptized, but from the Lier "Bygdebok" we know it should have been Otter. His parents were Ole Christensen and Dorothea Maria Fredriksdatter Busch.
Ole Christensen was christened at the Frogner parish in Lier November 29 1750, see right page at the bottom here. His father was Christen Rasmusen, Vivelstad, his mother is not mentioned here.
Dorothea was christened Oct 28 1756, see next to the bottom on the right page here - her father was Mons. (Monsigneur) Friderich Busch.

Are you researching the same people that the original poster, "kjenter", was? If not, then who? what? when?

Leer Michigan is in Alpena County. You normally start by finding what records are still available for that county. Birth/marriage/death records? federal censuses? state censuses? directories? cemetery lists? obituaries? You find all references and information that relates to the family or persons that you wish to research. Births, marriages, children born, death, etc.

If any of those persons were born in Norway then also watch for any information about year of immigration to the US and possible earlier places of residence before settling in Alpena Co.

"Ole Hansen born 17 Dec 1789 Lier farm name is Toverud" - this might be the man, see #128. Is this Andrines father? - by the way, Ole was a twin with #129 Gyri.
