Hans b July 11, 1863 (my grandfather)

We believe that the Berntsen records may have been burned during WWII.
Someone named Odd Nystrom??did help me with my grandfather Hansen 's side of the family but my computor crashed and we couldn't retrieve the information.
If anyone has any idea about how I should go about searching for these family members and where they lived I would appreciate their input.

I plan to visit Norway in 2007and hope to be able to visit the area where My grandparents came from
Thank You
Michael Ann Hansen Mortaloni

I am looking for sites that may help me find out if my grandfather was in an academy or was a cabin boy at age 12. Hans Hansen b 1863 in Skedsmo Akershus, Norway would be 12 in 1875.

Hans Hansen and his wife was both born in Skedsmo, Akershus fylke (county) according to the census of 1865. They were living in a sawmill labors house in what today is called Sagdalen. The house they lived in was called Tørtberg. Sagdalen is located at the west side of lake Øyern/river Glomma between Stømmen and Lillestrøm.
Anthon Berntsen, fisherman, came from a farm called Aaraas( lille) in Røyken, Buskerud fylke (county) according to the
1865 census. Both Anthon and Gunhild were born in Røyken.
There is a place called Åros in Røyken today. This place is located on the west side of Oslo fjord near Hurum. Being a fisherman could indicate that this is the right place.

Nora Hansen was still living in Sagdalen in census 1900 with husband and a whole lot of children. The birth year is 1864 that must be wrong as her first son Gothard Andreasen was born 1876.

This is the only Marie Hansen fitting the age born 1861, However she was married to a Laurits Heksenberg (census 1900)

My search for relatives now is centering on Marie Hansdatter who we think married Laurits Heksenberg. They are in the 1900 census as stated above. Are there any other census reports that I can access after 1099 say, 1910or 20. I am trying to ascertain whether Marie had any children . If so who they were and where are they or their off spring are now.
Included in that search would be the children of Nora Hansdatter Andreasen who lived at Bakken farm.

My grandfather Hans Hansen left Norway as a cabin boy. How do I begin to look up when he may have departed Norway for America. He was bout 12 when he got to Detroit...we think. then to Mason Wisconsin and finally to hayward where he met and married my grandmother Kristina Berntsen.in about 1893, I haven't located their marriage place. We thought it was in Eau Claire wisconsin bt I just checked the bride and grooms book for the Eau Claire County and they are not registared. the family story is that they left Hayward wWisconsin to take the train to Eau Claire to get married and have their picture taken. \I have the picture but there is no name on it to indicate that it was indeed here in Eau Claire. So Now I am going to search in Hayward in case they married there before their wedding trip to Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

SO...I need information on where the children of Nora Hansdatter and Andreas Eriksen lived after 1900. Where Marie Hansdatter and her husband Laurits Heksenberg lived after 1900 and did they have children. Also would my grandfather Hans Hansen a cabin boy be mentioned on the emigration lists leaving for America or would his name be listed in another place@1875 0r 1876.
Thany you for any information you can give me.

The questions you are asking are basic research questions. Recommend you read some of the articles on this site, ie: Hunting Passenger Lists and find Norwegian beginning research articles on Cyndislist.com.

The Skedsmo microfilm church record can be rented at a local Family History Center:

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.asp?display=topicdetails&subject=425957&subject_disp=Norway%2C+Akershus%2C+Skedsmo+%

They are not hard to read, a few basic words.

Here is what is available on Digitalarkivet for Skedsmo:

Digitalarkivet

There are no Norwegian census' available to the public after 1900.

I found the birth records for Anton Berntsen and Gunhild Jørgine Gulliksdatter in Røyken, Buskerud county. Anton's parents were Bernt Christiansen and Johanne Andreasdatter, living at Aaraas farm. Gunhild was the daughter of Gullik Oslen and Marthe Petersdatter. at the Grimserud farm. I you are still interested, I can try to find out more. I am the person that assisted with the Skedsmo people some time ago, and I will be glad to help you more.

In searching for Hans Hanson's arrival the US, it's always helpful to search the US Census. I've found a Hans Hanson, with wife, listed as Christian, probably meant to be Christina. Please let us know if this is him.

1900 US Census - Hayward, Sawyer County, WI

Hanson, Hans born July 1862 age 37 Married 6 yrs. Immigrated in 1885 Number of years in US 15 yrs. Occupation Lumber Grader
Hanson, Christian wife born Dec 1871 age 28 Married 6 yrs. 4 children, 4 still alive Immigrated in 1885 No. of yrs in Us 15 yrs.
Hanson, George, son born Oct 1893 age 6 At school Attended for 9 months of the yr
Hanson, Erving, son born May 1895 age 5 At school Attended for 9 months of the yr
Hanson, Florence, daughter May 1897 age 3
Hanson, Verna, daughter April 1900, 1/12

If this is him, don't worry that the birth year may be wrong. They may have gone by his age at the time of the census and ended up with the wrong year. This does state that he came over in 1885, which means he wouldn't of been a cabin boy.

Let us know if this is the right family.

Hans Hansen is still in Norway in 1875, at least according to the 1875 Norway Census. Wasn't this census actually collected in January of 1876?
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=12&filnamn=f70231&gardpostnr=458&personpostnr=3515&merk=3515#ovre

There should be some emigration record of him, even if he was a cabin boy, right? Maybe he wouldn't of been listed as emigrating if he was a cabin boy and his actual emigration didn't take place until later. I'm just typing out loud and trying to connect the dots.
