Hi!
I am searching for my granddads sister, Mathea Martinsen (or Martinson). She was born i Norway 30 Aug 1879 by parents Martin Johannessen og Anne Kirstine Hansdatter. Her birthplace was Spydeberg, Ostfold.
She emigrated to USA after 1895 and I think before 1910 (may be later). I do not know where in USA she settled, but someone in her family means it was around Chicago.
Mathea died just after the World War 2 (1945-1950). Her first name could be written Matha, Martha, Marthea, Thea or something like this.

You did not say if she got married. Illinois has a online statewide death index for the period 1916-1950:

Hi!

Now I have got a lot more information about Mathea. She arrived New York (Ellis Island) 01.11.1910 with the ship "United States" (source.: www.ellisisland.org). She should go for Chicago and her cousin Gunhild Andersen, 3533 Lyndal Ave.

In the Passenger Record from Ellis Island her name is written Mathia Yohansen. In the Ships Manifest some numbers are written - "11-167400-2/17/37-505". I have been explained that this mean that she want to be a naturalized amerivan citizen.

I also have a photo of Mathea taken by photographer P.Holgerson, 1654 California Ave in Chicago.

Can any one give me some help to find more about Mathea?

She was the halfsister of my grandfather.

Well, I found her in the Norwegian archives in the list of emigrants leaving from Kristiania (Oslo). Here is the link to her there: http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=12&filnamn=emikra1&gardpostnr=202526&merk=202526#ovre

Given that she was born in 1879, and she didn't leave Norway until 1910, she should be in the census for 1900, but you would have to have an idea where she lived. In her ship's registry leaving Norway, she states her home to be "Oscarsgate 731." That sounds like it must have been in Oslo - so you could search in Oslo but it would be better if you had an idea of where she lived back in 1900. I did a quick search for her in her birthplace area of Spydeberg, Østfold, but could not find her. But it was only a quick search.

I suggest you try to look there. She may have been knows as Mathea Johanesdatter or Johanesdtr or Johanesen. Here is the link to the archives and the 1900 census: http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=f00123&spraak=n&metanr=801

Thank you, Stephanie.

Most of the info was known, but there is always something new.
