I'm looking at the FHL catalog for Probate Records (skifteprotokoller) in Vang, Hedmark. There are two types of records available, which more or less cover the same period of years: Sorenskriveri and Prosti. Can someone explain the difference between these?
Thanks!

You can find the definitions here and also help with reading these older records:

So would the Prosti book be concerned only with probates of clergymen, and the Sorenskriveri handle everyone else?

In his online article about Norwegian probate records, John Follesdal included a sentence which may help or just confuse us more.
"One caveat should be noted: until 1820 or so, separate probate records were maintained for members of the clergy, members of the military as well as miners and teachers, and the family members of these persons." Source article at -- http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/skifter.html

I can imagine that this situation may have been applied individually as may have been necessary in different areas. Perhaps if you study both types of records for the particular area and time of your interest - it would become clear to you.
