I'm looking for information on John Olsen, born in October 1866, presumably in Drammen (according to family lore). He was a seaman and emigrated to Florida in 1889. The 1900 US census gives the middle initial D. I don't have the 1865 Drammen/Buskerud census, and I could not find information on him in the Digitalarkivet. I would appreciate any information about his Norwegian roots.

You can start by renting the Drammen church record microfilms at a local Family History Center:

It has probably occurred to you -- your John Olsen cannot appear in the 1865 Norwegian census because he wasn't born until a year later. The parish church records of births/baptisms for the time around Oct in 1866 as Jo Anne recommended would be the next obvious resource for you to check.
Keep your ideas about dates and name spellings flexible.

More advice about using the Norwegian church records can be studied here -

Yes, of course--I meant the 1875 census...
I'll try the church records. Thanks for the advice.

Only a small portion of the 1875 census for areas in Buskerud is complete in the digital database version. That isn't a complete database! The original 1875 census records have been copied to microfilm and are available at an LDS Family History Center if you really want to find him in that record. (I think I'd recommend checking the Drammen church parish records first - really easier to use as they are sorted chronologically by event type and date.)
