Looking for Ole Olson, b: 05. june 1865 and his wife Hilda (Hansdt.), b: 17. june 1876. They were from Austmarka in (Kongs)Vinger, Norway. They had a daughter with name: Odborg Hildora Olsdt., b: 11.05.1897, I mean she died little in Norway or over by the ship. And I mean they had a daughter, too, with name Selma, b. later. Ole Olson emigr. to (New York?) in the Spring 1899 and his wife emigr. 24.08.1899 with the ship Thingvalla to New York. Ole's adress when she came over was: Toverpaints(?) Str., East Howard, NY. But where did they live later?

Hi In the 1900 census they are living in Branford, New Haven county Connecticut. It looks like he is working as an iron worker. I think Hilda's destination on the Ellis Island was East Norwalk Connecticut and they mistakenly put New York. There is an Ole Olson listed on Ellis Island arriving in May 1899 with the destination of Norwalk Connecticut.

On the Ellis Island database, Hilda arrived on the Thingvalla on September 9, 1899, daughter Odborg, 2, died on voyage. Her destination was 40 Four Points St., East Howard, NY. This would have been Howard Beach in Queens. However, in the 1899 CT Norwalk Directory, Ole Olsen is living at 4 Points, East Norwalk, CT.
She would have been processed for entry into this country at the Barge Office in the harbor as Ellis Island was closed at this time due to a fire and the main building was being rebuilt and would not reopen until December 17, 1900.
The 1900 census was done on June 27th and Selma was listed as 7 months old which means Hilda was about six months pregnant on the voyage.
In the 1910 census they are living in Norwalk, Fairfield County, CT on St. John St. Ole, 45, married 12 years, laborer in lock shop Hilda, 33, 5 children, 4 living Selma, 10, born Connecticut Asta, daughter 8, born CT Helga, 6, born CT Bertha, 5 born CT
In 1920 they are also in Norwalk living on Osborn St. Ole is a moulder in a factor, naturalized in 1912. Daughters are 20, 18, 16 and 15.
In 1930 they are in Norwalk living in Beacon St. Hilda, widowed, servant for a private family Selma, 30, boarder, forelady in a dress factory Bertha C., 24, boarder, stenographer at a pump factory.
So Ole died between 1920 and 1930. Not alot of records on line for Connecticut, mostly colonial records. |
