I am looking for ancestors, Ole Bakken married to Rennog "Rena" Peterson. I have a 1900 Census or Elk Point South Dakota which states that Ole and Rena are the parents of 13 children, with 8 living. They immigrated from Norway in 1885. Ole was born in 1850, Rena in 1853. I have come across posting at Rootsweb which state that their daughter Christine was born in Trondheim, Sor-Trondelag, Norway. Ole and Rena's children are: Mathias born 1879, Martha born 1880, Christina born 1882, Eli born 1885, Rena born 1888, Bertha born 1890, Alfred born 1892, Oscar born 1896, and Frank no dates. I do not have information on the 5 other children, so i do not know if they died in Norway, on board ship or in the United states. Any information would be most helpful. Lori |

From the information given to you on various other message boards and forums - you should concentrate your research for ancestors in the Gausdal area of Oppland, Norway. Parish records as early as 1693 available for your use on LDS microfilm, published book (written in Norwegian of course) exists about the area "Gausdal Bygdehistorie". Good "how-to" do it yourself study material at this website - http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/articles.html

Hi, this must be their marriage record: Ole Mortensen & Ronnog Pedersdatter Marriage: 09 APR 1879, Vestre Gausdal, Oppland, Norway link
This could be Ole living on the farm Bradtlandbakken in census-1865. Bradtlandbakken could have been abbrevated Bakken, and used as a lastname.

Could this be your Ole Mortensen emigrating from Oslo on May 22nd, 1885?
Wife Rønnaug and children Matias, Marta, Kristiana & Ingevald emigrating 5 months later, on Oct. 9th, 1885

This could be Ronnog in the 1865 census:

Rønnaug and Ronnog are very common names for this area. |

Recommend you look at the Index of Departures and the Arrivals on this site by month. Not everyone came through the Port of New York. There is Boston, Philadephia, Quebec, Halifax.
The Juno and Rollo were feeder ships that took emigrants to Liverpool or Glascow to connect with transatlantic ships. Unfortunately, the Oslo registers do not indicate the shipping line contracted with by the emigrants. Maybe if you had "thanked" everyone for all the great stuff we have found for you I might have been inclined to spend some of my time looking for them in the paid online databases. |
