I am looking for information on my grandfather, Nikolai Ellefsen, I have found him on the 1900 census living with his mother, Jorgine Ellefsen, and brother , Helmer Johan Ellefsen in Austre Moland, Sagbakken. After that I can not find information on his emigration to the U.S. I am not sure if he was married in Norway or the U.S. My mother was born in 1910 and my aunt was born in 1908. I am unable to find them in the U.S. census until 1930 when they lived in Camden. N.J. I would like any information on Nikolai Ellefsen and his wife, Hanne Terkelsen.

Hanne Terkelsen was born on 12/3/1872, her parents were Johan Severin Terkelsen from Hafstad, Tromoy and his wife Tobine Hellingsdtr. In the 1900 census she was listed as living in Kristiania, but was also listed with her parents in Barbu, Solbakken farm.

Thank you for any information.

There are alot of clues in the 1930 census:

Nickolas Ellefson, born 1877, immigrated 1904, carpenter in shipyard, age first marriage, 29 (1906), born Norway
Hannah M., born 1875, age first marriage 31, (1906), immigrated 1904.
Thyra, 22, born New York
Emma M. Fill/Fitt, daughter, 20, born New York
Emma M. Fill/Fitt, grandaughter, 1, born New York

1920 census, Philadelphia, Phildelphia, PA
Nicholas Ellefseon, carpenter born Norway, immigrated 1906
Hanna, born Norway, immigrated 1906
Thyra, 12 born NY
Emma, 9, born NY

Finding them in the Police Protocols would be a recommendation:

Here are some suggestions you may or may not have already looked at:

They were both from Aust-Agder. The Barbu church records have been microfilmed and are available for rental from a local Family History Center. Barbu parish was not established until 1877, records before that time would be in Tromøy.

Here are the Austre Moland church records:

There is a lookup volunteer for Austre Moland:

There are quite of few good links on Norway Heritage to help you in your research. Here is one for Aust-Agder:

Thanks Carla, I guess I missed it in the 1910 census because of the spelling of the last name, his father's name was Ellev, so Ellevsen, is probably the real name. The Thress is probably my Aunt Thyra and Emma is my mother. She was born in 1910. Both of them were born in Whitehall, NY probably Kingsbury County, NY.

I appreciate your help.
