I am looking for passenger lists from the Hekla I for October of 1881. My Great-Grandma's name is Birgit Jallo. Most of the lists end in 1875.

Are you not mixing up the Hecla of the Cunard Line, and the Hekla of the Thingvalla Line? The Hekla of the Thingvalla Line was not built before in 1882. The Hecla of the Cunard Line was built in 1860, and in 1881 she was taken over by Laird Bros (ship builders) in part payment for the new ship Cephalonia. The Hecla was then overhauled and sold to Spain, renamed Conde de Vilana.

Do you know exactly what year and ship you are looking for?

Thanks for responding to my request. I had the year wrong--it was 1882 and she came in October. She came on the Hekla of the Thingvalla line according to her autobiography. Are there any passenger lists for this boat and this time of year? Thanks..... Rennae Millette

The S/S Thingvalla departed from Copenhagen on September 20th, called at Kristiania (Oslo) the 21st, Kristiansand the 22nd, and arrived at New York on October 7th 1882. This might be "your" arrival. You can get a passenger list from "The US National Archives (NARA), Immigrant and Passenger Arrivals"

http://www.nara.gov/publications/microfilm/immigrant/immpass.html

In addition to that the police in Denmark and Norway made lists (by port of registration) of emigrants leaving Copenhagen, Kristiania and Kristiansand. They are all online. Se the article "Hunting Passenger Lists" for more information. http://www.norwayheritage.com/ships/em-prot.htm

Hello! Thanks for your very prompt response and the information about the sailing dates of the ship.....very interesting info. I went under the websites you gave me and under NARA Immigration and Passenger Arrivals to look for a passenger list aand I found the correct date but was unable to click on anything--do I need to purchase the microfilm # (458) that I found on the web site for $34? On the second website I went into the digitalarkivet and found the correct police record for 1882 from Kristiana but there were 25,000 names (the list said)and thought there had to be a better way to retrieve what I wanted than to go through 5 at a time (all there is on the screen). I tried the "searches" for specifics above the passenger lists but couldn't retrieve anything. Does the search have to be in Norwegian? I feel like I am so close to getting a passenger list, but can't quite put my finger on it. I know that I have more specifics than most (she wrote a very detailed autobiography)so am hoping I can get what I want soooooon!! I sincerely appreciate your help.

No, you do not need to purchase the microfilm, you can go to the archives and look at it if you do not live to far away, or you might get it through ILL (inter library loan), or go to a LDS family center to look at it.

This Digitalarkivet link will take you to their English page:

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/index-eng.htm

If you read the full article about "Hunting Passenger Lists" you will find a lot of useful information on how to do the research. You might also read this article about Norwegian names: http://www.norwayheritage.com/ships/names.htm

Easy does it, genealogy research takes time, have patience!

Thanks.....Rennae Millette

I just went through the same thing. I did find my Grandparents however. I think you need to search each port. Thats what I did. My Grandparents left from Bergen, second Grandmother from Tondheim and her sisters from Kristiansund. The year is desiding factor.

In response to the last posting...I am trying to find the way their name was spelled on the 1865 census. I know the port, the date they travelled, and the line and ship they travelled on, but get no matches with the spelling I put in! So.....Thanks for reponding to my query, however!!

Since you don't give much information I guess one of the two are yours:

Thank you so much for your wonderful websites!! I was thrilled to see all of the Jallo family info and now know that I was looking for Jallo and not Knudsdatter as it is listed on the census. It is probably like that on the passenger list, as well.
Could you check on another name for me? Ole Alfstad(or Alvstad) Helgeson from East Slidoe(?sp.)Valdres. His father was Helge Svendsen Alvstad (Alfstad) and his mother Ingeborg Finkelson. Could you check on the 1865 census? I only know of one sister and she came to America. Thank you so much.

Just wondering if you could give me the county (I think they call them municipalities) of Valdres and then I could look up some names for myself from the 1865 census. Now I am looking for Ole Alfstad Helgeson from East Slidre(sp), Valdres. Thanks

I found the county (flyke) I needed, but not having much luck on the digitalarivet. I am looking for Ole Alvstad Helgeson, born November 1858. His parents were Helge Svendsen Alvstad and Ingeborg Finkelson. they lived (and Ole was born) in East Slidre, Valdres. I am looking for their family name as it is on the 1865 census so I can check the passenger list for Ole. I appreciate any help you can give me.

Rennae If you haven't found him in the 1865 census, look in Oppland Østre Slidre on the gardsnavn Mjølvald

Hi! I am not having any luck finding Ole Helgeson in the Oppland Ostre Slidre from the digitalarivet. Askeroi found his wife, Birgit Jallo, for me and I was wondering if she could look for Ole, too. His family names (parent's names) are in the previous two postings. I would appreciate any help that she (or any of you) could give me! Thanks so much. Rennae
