As part of my family history I am researching the Calypso as my gggrandfather was the Captain of this Ship. Charles Cook Smith. I know the ship was torpedoed on 11th July 1916 but can not find any online newspaper reports confirming this. Does any one else know where I can search to confirm the above information? How do I confirm that indeed Charles Cook Smith was the Captain ? Has anyone researched this ships disaster ? I would love to hear from you and any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
The New York Times Archives has two articles about the Calypso, December 28, 1918 and June 16, 1940 when it was sunk. You can purchase copies of the articles for a small fee:
Hi Anne, Thank you for your replies. Sadly the Calypso you are on about is not the same one as mine! There were 3 calypso's as I understand it and the one I am researching is No. 2. Run by the Wilson Line from Hull and torpedoed by U53 in Skagerak on 11th July 1916. 30 Crew & Master lost. The Norway Heritage site does list it. Kind Regards, Leasa
It would have helped if you had provided a link to the info in your posting, no use in doing needless research. No matter, the London Times still should have something in their archives for the 1916 Calypso and it is worth looking into. Researching the Wilson Line could also bring results.
