I was wondering if someone that is familar with Norway could help me. My grandfather Martin Everson was from Odalen Norway. When researching do I look only into Odalen to find him or is there communitys within Odalen and possibly farms or farm names that I should be looking for? Martin was born 1873-5 some of his records state 1873 some 1875. I don't have a name for his father however according to his death certificate his mother's name was Elizabeth which I feel could be accurate because there are Elizabeth in our family. My aunt and cousin and my middle name also. However no maiden name for her. I just don't know which way to go from here. I've looked in the Census in Norway but there are a lot of Eversons. Thank You Barb

It is best to continue in the same posting so everyone knows what has already been discussed:

You say you found his emigration record, posting a link would help.

If you rent the 1875 films, you will probably find him, these are not narratives, just a few basic words to learn. There is information on the Internet about reading old handwriting, it is not difficult.

This is a good dictionary to help in reading old parish records:

There are many links on Norway Heritage for research help and heritage organizations from your region of Norway.

According to his Draft Registration in Fargo, ND, Martin gave his birthday as Feb 13, 1873. His wife's name was Mamie.

The family is also in the 1920 census for ND.

Sorry, I don't know how to do then links.

I do not know what WebMeta is. I suggested going to a local Family History Center (LDS) and renting the microfilms, you get them for a month for less than $4.00. If you do not have a Family History Center near you, you can get them on inter-library loan but your library needs to have a microfilm reader & printer.

The 1920 census says he immigrated in 1896.

To Lester - if the information is on a subscription website, generally you cannot link the image. It took me a long time to figure out how to do links.

I thought you might find the webmeta web site useful for some folks out there. It gives census marriage immegration and more. It is www.webmeta.com. It is a Norwiegn based web site.
Hopefully I've sent this properly this time. Barb
