I am wondering if anyone can help me and give me advice on finding relatives in Norway. My Grandfather Endre Kjonegaard came to America in 1880 with three children. His wifes maiden name was Kvamme. They left the Kjonegaard farm to come to America. This was in the Voss area. Both of my Grandparents were baptised and confirmed in the Oppheim church.

Any help would be appreciated.

Endre on the Kjønnegaard farm in Voss, hordaland in census-1865.

Parents are Svend Endresen & Britta Anfindsdatter.

Do you know of other siblings to Endre besides of Britta Svendsdatter?

My understanding is that Endre had one sibling and as far as I know did not marry but don't know for sure.

This looks to be [wife] Britta in census 1865. Not many siblings there either...

Endre & Britta's marriage in Vossestrand on 12 Jun 1874: link

Endre's sister Britta did indeed marry! She got married on the same date (12 Jun 1874), and in the same church as brother Endre!

Here is the marriage between Britta Svendsdatter (b.1853) & Knud Pedersen (b. 1852).

They are living at the Hægg store farm in Voss in 1900, and have 3 children living with them:

Anna Knudsdatter b. 1880
Peder Knudsen b. 1886
Gudve Knudsdatter b.1892

LDS have in addition registered the following children to Britta & Knud.

Bertine Knudsdatter b. 29 Sep 1874

Svend Knudsen, b. 21 Mar 1876

Marie Knutsdatter, b. 13 Feb 1883, d. Feb 1883

Maria Knutsdatter, b. 18 Jan 1884

I am planning a trip to Norway in April. How would you suggest we find the kjonegaard and Haegg store farms?

Hi,
I suggest you fly to Bergen, and then hire a car at Bergen (Flesland) airport. The driving distance to the Hegg farm is 130 km (80 miles), and is a 2 hr drive...

Hegg store have Landnumber 144, titlenumber 2 (Gnr 144, Bnr 2), and is situated along the road FV 307, east of Voss city centre. Owner in 1950 was Olav T. Vold.

Tjørnagard is the modern spelling, and the farm have Landnumber 348, titlenumber 2 (Gnr 348, Bnr 2). It is situated by the road Vasstrondvegen off E16, north of Voss city centre. Owner in 1950 was Lars H. Kjønnegard.

Make a note of the Landnumber/Titlenumber, because there are several farms with the same name in the area. While there, you can ask some local people, or the local goverment, who can point out the exact address using those numbers.

Visitvoss.no

You could also contact the owner of this page, who looks to have a lot of Genealogy info about Emigrants from the Voss area.

Are you the same Ron Kjonnegard who was posting on the Clay County, SD board?

I am tracking the Norwegians in Clay County, SD.

You weren't asking me but if you are interested in the earlier generation...

Endre b.1794 and Brita Sveinsdtr. 1798 had 3 out of 7 children. who came to the US and settled in SD: Anna 1825, Holgjer 1829, Anna dy 1835.

The others: Holgjer 1823-1824, Svein 1827, Lars 1832-1832, Lars 1839

Their son Lars moved to Homlabrekk and had descendants. His son Anders 1871-1945 had a number of children. You might want to check that farm and see if Ander's son Ola [and descendants] stayed on Homlabrekk.

Svein's son(your Endre) came to the US and settled in SD as you know; his sister married Knut Person Hegg-Kvamme store Hegg, Voss.

I had to redo this post since I mixed the generation at first after too late of a night.

Hi Stephanie,

Yes I am the one that was researching Clay County. I was born in the house that My Grandfather Endre built when he came to america. My parents lived in the Volin area all their life. I now live in Chamberlain SD. Thanks for the info. Where do you live and what is your name.

Hi Ron,

My last name is Benoit though my maiden name was Bolster, derived from Bolstad in the Luster area of Norway. However, my other Norwegian parts ended up in the Vermillion, SD area. The Iversons from Ulvik and the Jordalens from Vossestrand have been there since the late 1850s and I still have many cousins who live there.

My Wolds from Tysvær are not concentrated there with the Wold name but mostly have moved on.

As I said before, I often try to figure out where the early Norwegians in the Clay County area were originally from in Norway. However, I live in California just outside San Francisco so I don't have access to all the resources I would love to view regularly.

I spent some time looking at your people at the time of those old postings. When I didn't hear back from you about it specifically, I just set it aside.

Endre was your gfather; which one is your father?

Stephanie
