I am trying to locate the parents of Gjeruld Ericsen (married 12 Apr 1814 Holt, Aust-Agder, Nor.). I've used the Digitalarkivet but am unable to find him in the 1801 census or elsewhere. Are ther other online soureces that might help?

Hi Samuel,
unfortunately, the 1801 census for Holt parish (incl. the sub-parishes Holt, Dypvåg, Flosta and Tvedestrand) are missing/lost.

This looks to be the guy you're looking for:

Gierulf Eriksen
Christening: 01 NOV 1789, Holt, Aust-Agder, Norway
Parents: Eric Hermansen & Sara Gierulfsdr

Gieruld Ericksen & Johanne Haaregsdr
Marriage: 12 APR 1814, Holt, Aust-Agder, Norway

Eric Hermansen & Sara Gierulfsdr (married 28 OCT 1780) are registered with these children on LDS:
  • Annike Eriksen, christened 13 Jan 1782 Holt, Aust-Agder, Norway
  • Kirsten Eriksen, christened 24 Aug 1783 Holt, Aust-Agder, Norway
  • Herman Eriksen, christened 29 Jan 1786 Holt, Aust-Agder, Norway
  • Gierulf Eriksen, christened 01 Nov 1789 Holt, Aust-Agder, Norway
  • Anniken Eriksen, christened 02 Dec 1792 Holt, Aust-Agder, Norway
  • Peter Eriksen, christened 15 May 1796 Holt, Aust-Agder, Norway
The original marriage record shows that his wife Johanne Haarechsdatter is from Tromøe sub-parish, Østre Moeland parish, Nedenæs Amt (Aust Agder county).

Here she is in census-1801, on the farm Rævesand, under the main farm Færrevig Væstre.
Parents are Haarig Johnsen & Ingeborg Olsdtr.

Children of Gjeruld Erichsen & Johanne Haarechsdr:

Erich Gjeruldsen, born 21 JUN 1817
Source: Aust-Agder fylke, Holt, Ministerialbok nr. A 5 (1813-1821), Fødte og døpte 1817, page 42.

Sara Gjeruldsdr, born 02 APR 1820
Source: Aust-Agder fylke, Holt, Ministerialbok nr. A 6 (1820-1835), Fødte og døpte 1820, page 3.

Oline Gjeruldsdr, born 27 MAR 1823
Source: Aust-Agder fylke, Holt, Ministerialbok nr. A 6 (1820-1835), Fødte og døpte 1823, page 28.

At the girls' christening records, the family are registered as living on the Solberg farm in Holt.
This could be the place where Gjeruld Ericsen and parents Eric Hermansen & Sara Gierulfsdr lived in 1801, but as said in the previous post, the 1801-census for that area is lost...

The land around the Solberg farm had a high incidence of iron ore, and the Solberg mine was the major supplier to Næs Jernverk (Næs Iron Mill), located just 1 mile north of the Solberg farm. I would gues the family was involved in the Iron Mill.
At Erich Gjeruldsen's christening, his fathers title looks like formand (foreman), ie leader of a workgang, prob. at the mill.

Hi Samuel,
I do have further information on Gjeruld's ancestors, but first of all the family has a large number of descendants in Norway, also living today - and some of them moved to the US as well.
If this is of interest to you, please send me an e-mail to: helge.viking@hotmail.com.
