Hi,

Sometime ago someone on forum mentioned it would be an interesting list to have of all the Saint Olav Medal holders in the U.S.

Reading this morning's paper (Fargo Forum )there was an article about such a holder, a man named Verlyn Anderson and in the article he mentioned two other medal recipients from his hometown of Rothsay, Minnesota as well: Chet Serkland and Sidney Rand

The article didn't say what degree of medal Verlyn holds but Verlyn received his medal June 2008, on a family visit to his great grandfather's church in Norway.

I know of three recipients who were connected to the Hallinglag:
Peder Nelson (1900-1984) who received his medal in 1970, Arley Bjella (1916-2001) who received his medal in the mid 1980s (before 1987), and Joan Groth Tryhus (1936- ) who received her medal in 1979. Peder Nelson was from Hadeland but served as editor of Hallingen, the Hallinglag's magazine for thirty years, Arley Bjella was an attorney and served in WWII and after in legal capacity at the trials at Nuremberg, later as CEO of the fraternal society The Lutheran Brotherhood, and Joan met the then Crown Prince Olav and Crown Princess Martha with flowers at the age of three years and later developed many cultural ties between Norway and U.S. in Fargo, N.D.

Also there was a governor of North Dakota, John Moses who died in 1945, who only accepted the medal if the honor was not publicized during his lifetime.

So here are 7 names to begin.

Hi Geir,

Thanks for the web page. I'm not seeking any information in particular (except perhaps for the date Mr. Bjella received his medal) but it appears the Palace may not have a totally comprehensive list since the beginning of the online database dates only to 2002 and it appears information may be being collected. The earlier posts which mentioned the subject also had a web address for an incomplete list of recipients and the database you sourced is not really browseable by us nosy types anyway who might just be looking for every name (we'll know it when we see it) not just a particular name. But thanks for the help!
