I believe my ggGrandfather, Ole Karl Jonsen, was born 5-Jan-1811 in Nordalens præstgjeld in Møre og Romsdal.

Although he was at least the seventh generation to live on Gjerde farms, in 1855 he apparently began selling and trading his ancestral land and moved his family to Grønningsæter, just up the road.

Some family entries thereafter appear to be in Grytten præstgjeld.

By 1900 his wife, Gurine Rasmusdtr, is listed in the Census as a widow, living as a føderådsenke with her oldest daughter, Inger Regine Olsdtr (by then married to Karl Fredrik Hansen). So I conclude that Ole Karl died before the 1900 Census.

But I'm having trouble confirming the specific date -- and even more interesting the cause -- of his death. It seems suspicious to me that he abandoned Gjerde farms, given the deep family roots there. Of his seven surviving children, six emigrated after he moved the family, and all continued to use "Gjerde" as their gårdnavn in their dealings with emigration officials, years after the family moved. I wonder if this could indicate friction and animosity, children versus father? Did Ole Karl have some medical or psychological problem (alcoholism, for example) that caused him to self-destruct?

Any advice on how I might pursue this inquiry?

I've found some interesting detail for one of my lines in the Bygdebøk.
I see there are the following:
Norddal bygdebøker : Ãttebok for Norddal
By Leonard Tafjord
Originally published in 1952 - see next entry
Volumes 1 and 2 of the 4 volume bygdebok were republished in Valldal by Norddal kulturstyre, 1997
they list the farm Gjerde as a part.

The books of the "Norddal bygdebøker" are available at several US libraries that participate in the Interlibrary Loan Program. Your local public library may be able to borrow it for your use locally.

Ole Karl was baptized on Jan 5 1811, see record in the middle of left column on left page, his parents were John Jonsen and Thorine Ellingsdatter. The mother Thorine Ellingsdatter died 1866, her place of residence was Gjerde, see #38.
In the bapt record for Ole Karl and Gurines twins Jens and Elen Malene is noted that an attestation for leaving the parish was issued July 8 1879, see #19&20 they left for "Gryten Romsdal", see
#12&13 no parents or siblings are recorded.
Johan Olsen, Gjerde signed out from Norddal 1872, being effektive from 1868 with the intention to go either to Amerika or Australia - he had been living in Grytten the last 4 years, see #4
Thomas Olsen, Grønningsæter signed out from Norddal in 1877 being effective from 1867 and heading for Romsdalen and Nordamerika, see #2

Kaarmand Ole Johnsen (=Ole Karl Johnsen), Kavli, died Oct 10 1882, see #16 he was 74 years old.
No cause given, probably just old age.
Gurine Kavlihaug (= Gurine Rasmusdatter) died April 22 1904, see #2 she was 82 years old.

Both Gjerde, Grønningsæter and Kavli can be seen when using this map
Why Ole Karl Johnsen sold off Gjerde, moved to Grønningsæter (which is some distance "up the road") and ended up at Kavli as a retired farmer at Haugen with the only daughter who stayed behind in Norway and his son in-law is difficult to say. (No indication of "some medical or psychological problem (alcoholism, for example) that caused him to self-destruct")

As always, the contributors to this site go way beyond the normal. This site is very much my favorite for questions about my Norwegian ancestors.

I will check each finding against my previous research and of course I will extend my records about Ole Karl Jonsen.

BTW, I am accumulating quite a bit more information about the lives and descendents of all these "Olsen" siblings who emigrated, and not just my own line of ancestry. If there are Norwegian genealogists who would be interested in some of these American findings -- not all of which came from computerized sources -- I would be happy to help.

Yes, indeed. I obtained volumes I, II & IV of this publication by inter-library loan from St. Olaf College library in Minnesota. This has been a treasure trove of information relevant to my research and appears to document my ancestors well into the 16th Century.
