I am looking for Hans T. Hoff born Sept 1, 1850. According to family history his name was Hans Thorgerson and changed his name to Hans T Hoff when he left Norway (Hadeland?) at age 17. He did not tell his family he was leaving. He was one of eight children. Father's name Thor and mother was Marie.

I have found a Hans Thorgersen b 1849 in the 1865 census. He is listed as born in Tysnes and is listed as living on Hofland Farm. His mother is Marta Samuelsdatter. All of this seems to fit the Hans I am looking for. I cannot find any of his family members after the 1865 census, nor can I find mention of a Hofland farm in Tysnes after 1865. Does anyone have any useful info?

Yes, Wiborg is right. I often get error when I am posting from Digitalarkivet, so for that reason: 1865 sencus Tysnes parish, nr 3428 Hans Thorgersen age 17, helping his mother Martha (e=widow) working on the farm with 5 siblings. His brother Johannes, age 15. You will find Johanes Torgersen Hovland born 1851,1900 sencus-Tysnes parish nr 3034, renter on Hovland and temporary living in Ålesund parish in Møre og Romsdal County, married, occ skipper- skipmaster and farmer. His brother Anders b 1838 lives on farm Hovland, 1900 sencus, nr 3052, married and 5 children.

Hans mother Marthe Samuelsdatter is probably born on the Hofland farm at Os in Hordaland, she was christn. Oct 2 1811 in Os, Hordaland and married Torger Johnsen July 02 1832. Their son Anders is christ. June 24 1838, and the son Johannes christ. Aug 17 1851.
Marthes parents seem to be Samuel Engelsen and Guri Endresdatter. living at Os in Hordaland.

Wow! Thanks for such quick and helpful responses! The limited information I had came from a grandchild of Hans--it was all handwritten for a school report done in 1931. Given the style of the document and that it was from memory, I can probably allow for the difference in names Thor vs. Torger and Marie vs. Marthe. Hans had given his birthdate as being Sept 1850--I'm left to wonder if he changed his birthdate after he moved. I can find no other Hans Thorgersen in Norway that seems to fit as well. I found a Hans Thorgersen travelling alone on the Concordia in 1869 to Quebec. This seems to fit as he was thought to have come through Canada--but the year recalled by family was 1867 and the year he listed in later census was 1870. When doing your research do you allow for being a couple years off and names being slightly off? Thanks for all the help!

Yes, allow 'plenty of leeway' for dates and name spellings - especially if they emigrated to another country. As a general rule try to consider 'sounds like' when it come to spelling variations - and then 'anything goes'.

Hi, I am writing here to say that I don't think the family that was found for DHOFF was the correct family. I have been helping a gentleman with this search for HANS T. HOFF and I feel that he is actually from Gran, Oppland. This would also reflect well with the fact that DHOFF refers to Hans T. Hoff being from Hadeland.
Here is information on this Hans Torgerson from Gran. One thing to point out is that there are Hoff farms in Gran.

1865-telling for 0534 Gran
District no. Page School distr. Local parish Parish Farm Title
1197 5 63 mittre Tingelstad Gran Taaje 1
Pers.no. Household Given name Last name Family pos. Occupation Marital status Age Sex Birth place Cattle Sheep Barley Mixed grain Peas Potatoes
7413 28 1 Torger Hans. Husf Hmd m Jord g 35 m Grans Prgj 1 2 5/8 1/4 1/8 2
7414 29 Mari Eriksd. hans Kone g 38 k Grans Prgj
7415 30 Hans Torgers. deres Søn ug 15 m Grans Prgj
7416 31 Thorsten Torgers. deres Søn ug 8 m Grans Prgj
7417 32 Anders Torgers. deres Søn ug 10 m Grans Prgj
7418 33 Peder Thorgers. deres Søn ug 6 m Grans Prgj
7419 34 Erik Thorgers. deres Søn ug 4 m Grans Prgj
7420 1 Anne Torgersd. deres Datter ug 2 k Grans Prgj

Here is the birth record for this Hans Torgerson shown in the 1865 census.
Source information: Oppland county, Gran, Parish register (official) nr. 11 (1842-1856), Birth and baptism records 1851, page 304-305.

I had put my quest for this Hans and the fact that I could not find him immigrating on the Norway List and someone there said that this Hans from Gran immigrated in 1871 with the destination of Milwaukee.

The person that I am helping would like to be able to have conversation with DHOFF since it seems they would be related.

I am hoping with the posting of this information on who I think HANS T. HOFF is will spark new interest in this. If DHOFF wants contact with me I will let him know who this other person is. I have helped the family with the family of Hans' wife and we do have all of her information documented.

Also if this proves correct we should probably change the heading for further postings on this so that it reflects the Gran, Oppeland area.
Thank you, Jean Marthaler

I'm officially declaring Hans Torgersen Hoff the most popular Norwegian immigrant on the internet. :)

I've been in discussions on the Ancestry.com message boards, the Hadeland Lag message boards, private e-mail, and now here (all in the last week or so). dhoff and I have been in contact in the last day, I need to reply to "pthoff" on the Ancestry boards, and Jean Marthaler might as well be in the loop on this. Anybody who hasn't e-mailed me yet, please send an e-mail to travis.woyen@gmail.com.

Most all of the information that I have has been posted on the Hadeland Lag inquiry board already in the Hans Torgersen Askimeiet thread.
Thanks,
Travis

Thanks,
Travis
