Bygdesoga from Kviteseid gives me the basic information. I have used it - and then searched churchbooks for exact birthdate. I believe it is Svend you have found. Then both Ouver and Svend came to New York - but was it normal for Norwegians to stay there - or did they move on?
Thanks for all help

Is it possible to write to NARA to get copies of the entry to New York for Svein (Svend) and Auer (Ouver) and how do I do that?

A lot of times Norwegian names don't get spelled properly in the census but I did a search on Auver and got lucky. In the 1910 census there is Auver G Lerder (bad spelling of Leir??) 45 years old immigrated in 1883. The middle initial used by Norwegians would often indicate their patronym so G for Gunleikson? What makes it even more likely that this is the correct Auver is on the same page is Evin Lier age 40 immigrated 1896 married to Anne age 42 immigrated 1896 with children Inga 13 and Halvor 9 both born in Minnesota. This would fit with Eivind and Anne Halvorsdatter and the naming of the children follows the Norwegian practice of the time of naming of children after parents.

They are in Mountrail county North Dakota TWP 157 RANGE 89
Also listed with Auver is a sister Sarah age 36 immigrated in 1886 This could be Sigrid.

North Dakota has the census images on line Click Here Click on the 1910 census and on 109-07a.gif Evin is line 7 and Auver is on line 29
Also check out the BLM land records Evin G Lier and Auver G Lider are listed.

Here is a Link to the search page. I cannot link directly to the record

Thank you Carla! Now the next question is how to find living people from that family. I must make a call right now to tell the family what you have found.

Hi Turid More good news first. I found Talleiv living in Benson County North Dakota living in Broe township and he has a large family. He is also using Lider as a last name. It would be interesting to find out how that came from Lier Click Here 1910 census 16-08b.gif line 74 1920 census 25-08a line 1.

To try locating living relatives I would try contacting the historical societies listed on the sites I gave you. Also search on a people finder site like SearchBug for Lider's in North Dakota and start contacting them.
Posting on the message boards for the county at Rootsweb

There must be a lot of family over there - nine children in one family! I will surch all over for living Lider now. The most important now is to be sure that they are the right one. But it must be, names and years seems to fit.
Thank you

Turid,

All I can do is add Auver's wife's name. It was Hannah.

They are in the 1900 Minnesota census for Ottertail County, Carlisle township.

Hannah was born Dec. 1867, her age was 32, they were married 7 years, she was born in Minnesota, and both parents were born in Norway.

Selma O. was born in Minnesota June 1896, age 3,
Alma C. was born in Minnesota, age 1.

FYI, I called Mark Porter, and gave him this web site to check, and the family will be in touch with Turid.

The name was changed from Lier to Lider, because people would pronounce it Liar.

I grew up 6 miles southeast of Baker, ND. When I was a kid, there was a guy named Kenny Lider in the area. I don't know offhand if there are any Liders around there nowadays or not (can't remember if Kenny is still around or not). I'll ask dad when I'm home for Easter.
