David, I also located both of the Juul Olsen's you are working with. The one born in 1798 is at the Lund farm in 1801- age 3 - and his mother is also named Astri. I checked the IGI and they are both there - and a surprise - Juel born 1803 has a brother of the same name born in 1805. I did not find a death for the first Juel, so they may have been named for a Juul on both sides of the family.

81. JUEL OLSEN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 19 APR 1798 Nord Aurdal, Oppland, Norway

82. JUEL OLSEN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 18 SEP 1803 Nord Aurdal, Oppland, Norway

83. JUEL OLSEN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 15 APR 1805 Nord Aurdal, Oppland, Norway

In other records, I did not find a marriage for Juul Olsen and Siri Knudsd in Nord Aurdal, but they did have two sons born in Aurdal. I did not find their names in the death register.

On the 1865 census in Land there are two men with the same names and of the same ages, but they are listed as being born in Land - this could be an error. It may be worthwhile to check them out.

Sondre Aurdal - births
1831 Apr 4 BR Knud Mar 13 to Juul Olsen N Soelbergeie & Siri Knudsd.
(?? 1865 Land - #6930 at Rossing age 35)

1833 Feb 24 Br Andreas Feb 2 to Juul Olsen & Siri Knudsd N Solbergeie
(?? 1865 Land - #6222 at Elthon øvre age 32)

I am confused, the Juel Olsen in LDS was born in Nord Aurdal, father Ole Juelsen, mother Astri Andersdatter at the Lund farm, parish record is third from top left hand page here
- where does this Juel Olsen fit into the picture?
See the family in 1801 here
Juel Olsen and Sigrid Knudsdatter were married in Vestre Slidre Dec 18 1831, see #36
Sigrid must have been born about 1814 as also can be drawn from her death record. Juel however was 23 years in 1831, should have been born about 1808 then.
The widower Juel Olsen who married Inger was 39 years old in 1842, born in 1803 then, but we also have a Juel Olsen born in 1805, both with the same parents Ole Juelsen and Astri Evensdatter and living on the farm Midt Strand!

Yes, this has been confusing me also. The family and extended family found in the 1801 at the Lund farm is the ones I had originally pursued; however, I believe it conflicts with the age of Juul in the 1865 census at the Paulserud farm.

Juel Olsen 1803 had the following Godparents:
Knud Knudsen ibid, Harald Heljesen Agervold, Henrik Arnesen skoleholder, Kari Eriksdatter Rødnes, Ragnild Evensdatter Haaverud.
For Juel Olsen in 1805 the Godparents were:
Juel Haaverud og hustru Astri, Ragnild Evensdatter ibid, Harald Heljesen, Agervold og Syver Halvorsen Strand.
(Juel Haaverud and Ragnild Evensdatter were Astri Evensdatters siblings, see 1801 census for Haarud)

A good night sleep was doing well (hopefully)

I think perhaps we have been working with two namesakes.
Juel Olsen who settled down in Søndre Land in 1835 was coming from Solbergeie.

Aurdal Sept 8.1805 #7 from top right page.
Christened "Døbt Ole Juelsen and Anne Knudsdatter son Juel #7

Juel´s confirmation was taken place in 1822:
Juel Olsen Solbergeie born Sept. 8. 1805 #22

Aurdal 1801:
Ole Juelsen´s parents was Jull Helgesen and Ingri Andersdatter on Solberg Nordre

Einar,
yes it is so many Juul Olsen/Ole Julsen in Aurdal parish, actually I cant remember to have seen the name ever before.
I do believe Juul Olsen Solbereie b. Sept. 8. 1805 is the right person, but need to clear my mind and put put the topic away for a while.

I have searched the migration records for Aurdal, but havn´t found Juul Olsen leaving the parish and the migration records for Slidre from the period he stayed on one of the Høyme farms don´t exist any more, most likely damaged or lost.

I also tried to find Juul Olsen´s death record for Søndre Land, but havn´t suceeded so fare.

It should be a 1875 cencus for Søndre Land, not found.

Well, most likely I might have overlooked him.

You find them moving out of Sør-Aurdal, see #1&2
Not useful for the challenge in this case though.

Siri Juulsdatter, who is listed as the wife of Chrestian Larsen in the 1865 census for Søndre Land on the Tørrestuen farm, is for sure either a sister or a half sister of my ggranddmother Andrine. There names in America were Christian and Siri Berg . They had many children who were close to the Haugens. Otto and Syver both homesteaded in North Dakota.
I believe Ingeborg Julsdatter was a godparent to my grandfather's sister Marie (1876).
I'm not sure if this adds anything, but Siri's name was missing from the children of Juul Olsen

I don't remember if they listed Siri's actual birth date, but I think they referred to her as being born of Juul's second marriage - she was named in honor of his first wife, Siri, which is traditional in Norway.

I found the death of one of the children named Juel - in Nord Aurdal
1810 July Juel - Ole Juelsen Midstrand 4

also in Sondre Aurdal - a death
1825 Mar 16 Ole Juulesen Soelberg 52
(he would be born ca. 1773, which corresponds with the birth in
1773 June 8 Br Ole to Juel Helgesen Solberg & Ingri Andersd)

Yes Siris parents are Juul Olsen and Inger Knudsdatter, see #118
by the way see my posting Jan 17!
The Juel Olsen who died in 1810 is obviously Juel christened April 15 1805 - we can strike him out as a possible father for Andrine.

Family history records one Knut Johansen, a half-brother of Andrine's, who was reportedly in the business of selling timber.

Karen Juulsdatter, whom I believe to be the older sister of ggrandmother Andrine, is found in the 1900 census at Braenden (lille) in Søndre Land with her husband Nicolai Braenden.

I'm looking for anything that may help unravel the " mystery of the many Juuls"

Einar,

Ironically, Beate Jakobsdatter- #45 on the same page as Karen is my ggrandfather Gunder or Gunner Jakobsen's (Søndre Land - 1864, #118) sister. He is the father of grandfather Jul's wife Gunda Jacobson. Beate will later marry Otto Julsen November 10th, 1874 in Viker Kirke, Ådal, Buskerud . However, this is another project I have begun working on.

This should be the right Juul Olsen.

The migration record for Sør Aurdal you found Einar when Juul Olsen left Aurdal for Land parish, registered on Sunday 1. in Advent 1835 show him as:
Juul Olsen Nordre Solbergeie Gaardmand (Farmer), watch Nordre Solberg also shown abowe.

Nordre Solberg 1801, 17 people from the Juul family lived on the farm in addition to two subfarms, so it seems to have been a rather large farm.
Helge Jullsen age 32 as oldest brother of Ole Jullsen and Juul Olsen´s uncle, now living on a "sub farm" or Solbergeie married and 3 children, most likely he take over Nordre Solberg after his parents.

Juul Olsen was registered as Gaardmand (Farmer) in several records even it seems he was coming from a sub farm Solbergeie (owned by Solberg).
If he was he would have been listed as a Huusmand (Cotter or tenant farmer)

Also watch abowe his confirmation record: born Sept 8. 1805, his Christening record born Sept 8. 1805 and when he settled down in Søndre Land Nov. 2. 1836 he was coming from Solbergeie.
Solbergeie/Nordre Solbergeie is the red thread in my opinion.

Kari Amundsdatter age 74 is the housewife Ingri Andersdatter´s mother.
