Nels Ole Nygaard b Jul 1853, d 2 Nov 1940 in Underwood, Otter Tail, Minnesota and his wife Gjertrud ??? b Sep 1851, d 13 Apr 1934 also in Underwood. came from Norway with their daughter Carrie (poss Carolina) C Nygaard b Apr 1878 married Martin Mortenson of Minnesota. Carrie died 10 Nov 1913 in Underwood. As far as I can tell, those 3 were the only ones who came over. That was abt 1881. I don't know what their norwegian names were, Nygaard is all I have. I would appreciate any information. Oh, yeah, I'm not sure if Gjertrud and Carrie came the same time or a year later. |

Did you look at the1900 and 1910 US censuses for Otter Tail County Minnesota? ? (Tordenskjold township)
The daughter was adopted. They all list year of immigration as 1881. |

Niels Birth: 26 Jul 1853, Skjervøy, Troms Christening: 21 Aug 1853 Parents: Ole Nielsen & Bereth Marie Olsdr
Census 1865
-------
Gjertru Birth: 24 Sep 1851, Skjervøy, Troms Christening: 19 Oct 1851 Parents: Johannes Larsen & Kirstea Mathisdr
Census 1865
So the Nygaard farm name is from Gjertruds home.

Hopkins mentioned that the daughter was adobted...
Gjertruds sister Rangnild Kjerstine christened a girl named Kirstine on 25 AUG 1879. Link However, a bit late with regards to your birth date of Apr 1878...
This one is more likely: Possibly Gjertruds sister Elen, christening a girl named Kirstine Emilie on 09 JUL 1878. Link

Hopkins, yes I knew she was adopted. In another census, she was listed as coming to the US around 1882, so that's why I put the different dates.
Thank you for all the info! I will look at everything and see what I can find.
I can't thank you enough for helping me look for these people with little information! |

Thank you for all that information. Ok, so Nygaard was the farm name, so Nils (Niels) was born as Olesen, is that correct? In one census, Carrie's (the adopted daughter) name is Carrie Cristina, so Kjerstine is likely. So they adopted her sister's daughter? |

Actually, Nils Olsen has made his way to the Nygaard farm at the time of census-1875..., living there as a lodger...! Link Looks like he was studying something...
Gjertrud/Hjertru is helping her mother widow Kirstine Mattisdatter with the farm.
Carrie Cristina...? That could be Karen Christine in Norway..., so 'm not 100% convinced that Kirstine Emilie is the right girl after all...
There's a girl christened Kirstine Karine on 29 APR 1878, but I can't see any connection to her parents and Nils or Gjertruds families...
I would say it's very likely that they would adopt a girl from within the family, either from Gjertruds or Nils' family. To adopt a girl not related to the family was very rare those days. Children could be adopted for instance if the parents were not married, or the mother or father could not support the child.

The Kirsten Emilie you found, I think, is likely, only because she could have been born in Apr and christened in July. Maybe Nils and Gjertrud changed her first name and made her first name her middle name when they decided to come to the States. |
