Hi, I am new to the site. I am seeking information on my maternal great grandmother, Elise Sorlie. She was born in Gjovik Nov. 24, 1891 and I believe came to the US around 1909. She lived in Minnesota in the early to mid 1900's and was married to a Michael Wenker and had 1 daughter, Rosalind..then later moved to Washington and was married to an Elmer Hoxtel. She died in Washington in 1970.I have not been able to find her parents names or anything about her life in Norway. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!
Rosemary

You must have found her Social Security death index on Rootsweb, for only $28. you can order a copy of her SS application, filled out by her, the best document you could start with. It includes alot of information including names of parents, place of birth. That, marriage application/license, church records are primary resources. Census, death certificates, obituaries are all secondary resources and subject to verification.

Gjovik is in the Ringsaker Municipality in Hedmark County and the parish records are available online, they are not hard to search:

Here is the Sørlien farm in the 1900 census, no Elise but a Borghild born 1891:

Elise Kristiansen was her name. On Sept.18. 1909 she left Kristiania(Oslo) heading for North Dakota. She was baptised in Hunn, Vardal, Oppland County on February 7. 1892. Her parents were Kristian Martinsen and Mathea Olsen. In 1900 you find them in Vardal on the farm Nyborg Nedre. I hope this can be helpful.

In the LSD database you will find that Christian and Mathea married in Hof, Solør, Hedmark on March 1, 1866.

This means that they probably have more children than the three mentioned in the 1900 census.

Ole Guttormsen was born on farm Nyegaarden in Hof parish in local parish Aasnes/Åsnes, 1801 census Hof municipality, Hedmark County, but there are two Ole Guttormsen, both age 4 living on Nyegaarden (New farm), parents was eighter Guttorm Olsen and Maria Guttormsdatter or Guttorm Olsen and Giertru Arnesdatter, both free farmers. The problem is that the old church books from Åsnes was lost in a fire at Åsnes vicarage in 1929, likely all books earlier than 1870. Perhaps Åsnes Historielag can help: ptelle@online.no

When Christian and Mathea married their age is recorded as 21 years old, Christians father was Martin Christophersen and his mother was Karen Olsdatter. They lived at Sæterbakken, a cotters farm under the main farm Gjølstad. Christian was born there June 1 and baptized June 9. 1844.
