Can anyone tell me how to check passengers lists for Cunard Lines` SS Servia from Liverpool to New York, arrival 18.sept. 1883 ? Maybe Karoline (Caroline) Sofie Erika Pet(t)ersdatter, born 1959 in Groenjord, Lenvik ( Tromsoe) was on board that voyage. It is very important for me for further search for her in Duluth, St. Louis. Any idea how to search forward from this year in Duluth? Jan Kåre Bergland, Tromsoe, Norway. |

To refresh our memory:
http://www.norwayheritage.com/snitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3171
I tried to find her previously on a passenger list for 1883 but could not. That does not mean she was not there but I just could not find her. She was traveling with the Cunard Line which had routes to New York and Boston. Maybe something happened and she had to change her plans/shipping company/date of departure. She might have gone into Quebec and then a Great Lakes boat to Duluth.
I just looked at all thirteen pages of the Servia list and there are just English, Scottish and Americans on the list, no Scandanavians. Even if she was on the list, at that time, there would not be much information, only destination, either New York/Boston or final destination, Duluth. It was not until around 1906 that the American passenger lists started listing more information, contact person, etc.
Other options for you are:
Subscribe to Ancestry.com or rent the microfilm at a local Family History Center.
If she got married, she would have taken her husband's name. There is no census for 1890 so the first census to check for her is 1900. She could have gone by Karoline/Caroline/Kari/Carrie, their are many possibilities. Without knowing her husbands name or a childs name, finding her is very difficult. There was a possibility in Duluth, a Caroline Paulson, immigrated in 1883, born 1860 but on the below databases a Caroline Olson married Ludvik Paulson in 1893 so I do not think it is her.
There are a lot of online, free, databases for Minnesota and here is the St. Louis County GenWeb, I did not find her in any of them:

Thank you for answering. I have further questions and comments: First, her ticket was prepaid in N.Y., how? By anyone she knew there and waited for her?, or was there any way to finans the voyage in America? I have seen in many registrations for other emigrants that tickets were prepaid! Next: When prepaid ticket with Cunard Line, isn`t it most possible that she had to go with Cunard? Would it be difficult to change to another line? or a Boston arrival with nest Cunard ship instead of N.Y. if she missed the SS Servia- departure? Next Cunard-opportunity would be the arrival of SS Cephalonia to Boston 22.sept.1883, then SS Marathon to Boston 29. sept. 1883, SS Batavia to Boston 8. okt. and SS Samaria to Boston 14.okt. 1883. Explain for me exactly where and how I can get these passenger lists ? Online? Anyone having these?
But: Before I leave the SS Servia`s arrival 18.sept., I would like to study its passenger lists very closly. It seems unbeliveable that there were no Scandinavians on board, I have heard there often was registrated wrong nasjonality for passengers. Do anyone have this list? Online? Even if a passenger lists don`t give much info, it is important to be sure that she really came to America, and when !!
Everyone who can help me with info, please answer ! Jan K. |

I think your arrival dates to New York need to be moved out. If she left Trondheim 5 Sept. 1883 on a feeder ship to Hull, and then had to go Liverpool, my guess would be the end of September or early October to arrrive in New York.
She was not on the Celtic, which arrived October 1st. Nor on the Baltic, which arrived October 2nd.
My computer system is to slow, to scan and search each ships arrival. There are many, many ships to search through.
Sorry,

Well, as I said, I looked at all 13 pages and there were NO Scandinavians listed, the fact that you do not believe me doesn't change anything. The incorrect nationalities were mostly Swedes/Norwegians & Danes getting mixed up not British and American people on an English ship with an English crew.
AND, as I said, you can join www.Ancestry.com and look at these lists yourself OR you can rent the microfilms at a local Family History Center, www.familysearch.org/," target="_blank">http://www.familysearch.org/, there are 10 Family History Centers in Norway
There comes a point in family history research where you have to start spending money and leaving your home to do research. Everything is not free and everything is certainly not on the Internet.
Well, you know she wrote letters from Duluth so she did come to America.
There are NO records for ticket offices or lists of people waiting for passengers when they got off the boat, everything in the past is not saved. It said ticket paid in America, not New York. You really do not have enough information to find her in America.
I have seen many instances where people arrived on a different line then the one they contracted with. Many someone died in her family and she delayed the voyage, maybe there was bad weather, maybe she had a cold or fever and had to delay her departure. These are questions that have no answers.
You need to do more research in Norway; did you check the local parish moving out records? Other people/relatives from the same area going to America around the same time? Local historians, history books.
I suggest you go to the Links section of this website and familiarize yourself with Norwegian research in North America. |

Thanks for answers, I know it will be very, very difficult to find anyting in Duluth about her, -maybe her arrival i a passenger list the only, when I go on searching. Now I know where to find the lists, it is one step on the way ! And then take arrivals one by one, for all lines, not only Cunard, -and also the other harbours.
And to Jo Anne, sorry, it was not ment that I didn`t believe you, I only thought maybe it could be a mistake of nasjonality! And had to be quite sure of it before leaving the SS Servia-theori ! I`m really very happy with your help and information ! As you know, I an "new on board", but think it will be unpossible to find more about her home, my only info is what my father told me from his childhood, and that she got attests from church for Amerika-voyage in july 1883 ! |
