Wanda, John Olsen Hjartsjø born feb. 1836 on Hjartsjølia was son of Ole Olsen born 1797 and Anne Olsdr born 1806.
Ole Olsen Hjartsjø age 30 and Anne Olsdr Lonar age 22 married Sep-. 23. 1828 #8 One of the best men was (lensmann)Jon Torbjørnsen Hjartsø, so it seems you are related to this family to, but only a look up in Hjartdalsoga can confirm it.
Lia means hillside, Hjartsjølia is placed in the hillside between Sud "Souther" and Nord "Northern" Hjartsjø
The family emigrated from Hjartsjølia and Hjartdal 1847, total 10 children, Ole, Øli, Ola, Anna, John, Margit, Gunild, Ambros, Jaran and Anne. #140-51
No passenger - list found for Gro Olsdr Gryte, but she left Tinn April 7. 1855, most likely with folowing ship: Either Gange Rolv leaving Kragerø April 17 (less likely) or more likely: Johanne Marie or Espindola, both ships leaving Porsgrunn Mai. 9, arr. Quebeck June 19. and 30.
Dolores, Gro Olsdr Gryte was Ole Johannesen Hjartsjø´s 2. wife.

Hello,
Kåre, thanks for the information on Ragnhild's brother Ole. Having the children's names will definitely help with identifying him here.
Dolores, as Kåre said, Gro Gryte was my G G grandfather Ole Johanneson's (Johnson's) second wife. I'm still trying to find out if they had any children from that marriage. Oline, my G grandmother, was supposed to have had 9 siblings and so far, I only know of 7, so I'm trying to find out if Ole and Gro had children. His first wife Ragnhild, died in 1862 at the age of 42, with quite a few small children. He then married Gro Gryte from Tinn, but I'm not sure about the date that they got married, but have seen that both Ole and Gro died in 1866. I'm thinking that they may have had some tragic accident, because for both of them to die the same year, at the ages of abt 40 and 49, seems strange. Many of Ragnhild and Ole's children were given to other families in the area, which made it very difficult to find info on my g grandmother Oline, because everyone had a different name for her. Thank you for all the info on Gro Gryte. I'm very interested in finding out more about her. I'd like to find out why, at the age of 29, she traveled by herself to the US. Was it to live with other family that had already settled here or was she coming to work?
Thanks again! Wanda |

Hi Wanda, Torbjørn Olsen Lonar 1764-1842, his grand-daughter Anne Ambrosdatter Lonar 1790-1821 married Ole Johnsen Lonar. Their daughter Anne Olsdr Lonar born 1806, christened June 29 central page left side, she died 1871 in America, she married 1828 (former posting) Ole Olsen Hjartsjø (Hjartsjølia) and they emigrated 1847 to Columbia County Wisc.
Ole Olsen Hjartsjø was most likely son of Torbjørn Jonsen Hjartsjø and Torgon Torbjørnsdatter Lonar´s son Ole (Torbjørnsen) born 1745 and Anne Olsdr Hjartsjø, because: 1786 when Torbjørn set up his last will concerning his his two sons Torbjørn and Ole he wrote" ...med sin siste vilje....his last will he wanted to share the farm between his sons Torbjørn and Ole...." Torbjørn as oldest son should inherit 2/3 and Ole 1/3 of Sud Hjartsjø.
This must be Ragnild´s younger brother Ole born 1834, he emigrated 1851 Ole Johnsen Hjartsjø participated in the Civil-war as Private. He is listed as Jarshaw.
Ambros (Ambrosius) Jarshaw mentioned in the same as living in Rake, Iowa might be Ambrosius Olsen Hjartsjø, one of the 10 siblings from the emigration record abowe.
Hjartsjø is most likely local pronounsed Jartsjå /jarsjå, spelled Jarshaw in USA.

Kåre,
So, I'm probably related to the John Olson Hjartsjø that married Agnete Maelom. I thought so, but wasn't sure if they would of been cousins with Ragnhild or not.
There are many Ole's to keep straight!
Thanks for telling me the pronounciation for Hjartsjø. I was close, but it's good to know how to say it. Take care, Wanda |
