Can someone tell me exactly what the following means? I got part of it, but some of the wording I couldn't find:
født paa Yttre Bøe-drukned ved at falde gjennom isen paa viigs bugten
born on Yttre Bøe farm, drowned by falling through.....?
Thank you!! |

viigs bugten is old danish spelling... it would be spelled viksbukten nowadays.
is = ice vik = creek, cove, inlet bukt = bay
...drowned by falling through the ice in the (creek) bay.
vik and bukt are actually two words meaning the same...
Vik could also be the name of the place/area, and has got that name because there is a bay there...
Several hundred places in Norway are named Vik or contains "vik", because there is a bay there... we have a long coastline, and many fjords and rivers...

Thanks, Jan Peter! So, he drowned by falling thru the ice at Viigs farm, then....I wrote it exactly the way it was written on the record. I tried to copy it into the message, but it didn't work. Thank you for your help!

Where is this?
Could it be Drangedal?
The Vik farm there has a very nice bay next to it, belonging to the Bjorvatnet lake. The Vik name for this farm comes of course from the bay of the lake. This is cold inland, and the lake would be totally covered by ice during winter. There is an "Yttre Bøe" farm 20 km north of this area.

Ps: Looks like its a cowberry area... the mountain to the left is called cowberry mountain... What do you call it? I see it has several names in english... cowberry, red bilberry, mountain cranberry...
red bilberry... bilberry in norwegian is blåbær, directly translated into blueberry..., so red blueberries... røde blåbær...

Is this Sogn og Fjordane? Stryn or Innvik is where the Yttre Bøe farm was that he was born on. Looks like it would be a very nice area. He is the 4th person in my family that has drowned so far that I have found. Thank you for all the information and the map! As always, you are a great source of information! |

No, this was not Sogn og Fjordane..., it was a wild shot.... Drangedal is in Telemark county.
Here is the Vik in Stryn..., there is a Bø farm to the right.... , Yttre-Bøe means Outer Bøe. so there could have been another Bø farm to the right...
Vik is a small bay in the bigger Strynebukta bay in the fjord Nordfjord.
