Mine is coming from Sauherad and Hitterdal in Telemark, I like the records from Telemark, the priests seems to have had a good economy sinse the letters are large and the ink is not thinned with water.

The Olsen´s and Arkoset was a hard nail to find out about, it was like a needle in a hay stack, once I thought perhaps some of the records was destroyed by water or unreadable since they wasn´t online, but Arne´s birthday August 12 and the name Arkoset pronuced with an stum t convinced me about Sandsvær but made me expandend the search, and then suddely......

Her is Ole Olsen Woldene moving from Gransherad under Kongsberg to Arkoset in Sandsvær July 3.1852, right page nr 39:
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=1100&idx_id=1100&uid=ny&idx_side=-317

Same year Knud Olsen Voldene moved from Kongsberg to Arkoset, left page nr 23:

Hi again, Kare.

I am positive that I read some details about this, online, and I will try to find the URL for you; indeed, it may have been at Wikipedia, and if so, maybe there's already a Norwegian version online, too.

I was so startled when I saw the information about these places, because.... really, without the Internet, I doubt I'd have EVER come across any such information in a conventional brick & mortar library.

I wonder if Vollende /Wollende was used as last name in USA since they all was born there?
I've not yet found anything for either Vollene or Wollene, OR for Voldene or Woldene. However, I am such a clueless newbie, that should surprise NO ONE, LOL!

I wonder if maybe Berith changed her name to Bertha when she emigrated to America?

I've been examining the Scandinavia Lutheran Cemetery records online, and I wonder how many of the entirely of Olssons - Olesons - Olesens - Olsons & Olsens are part of Ola Olson Arkaas' extended family.

Knut Olson used the surname ARKAAS in the 1880 census, while Arne used the surname Olson.

Anyway, now I am getting rather curious about a couple of LARSENs whom I found buried nearby, very close to Arne & Guri's graves.

Wow,
many Olsens to look up in the Scandinavia Lutheran Cemetery.
Ole or Olsen was the most common name in Norway.
Berith or Berthe could also be changed to Betty in USA.

In Sandsværs Historie a Ole Olsen Arkoset born 1832 is mentioned. His GGrandaughter Johanne Martinsen tells that this Ole worked as a watcman in Sandsvær and always kept a black dog. He married Helvig Pedersdatter from Siljan and moved to Kvelde in Vestfold County.

I have a feeling this perhaps might be Ole Olsen Voldene since I cant find him in the emigration records (but I didn´t find Arne neither even he emigrated). This Ole died 1891.

Her is another confirmation record, Knud Olsen Arkoset is nr 23
Knud Olsen Voldene (Arkoset) 2/11.17(age) Arkoset i Luxefjeld. Luxefjeld was a nearby countryside close to lake Mykle , but Arkoset was in Sandsvær.

I'm thinking that it is entirely possible that our difficulty with finding "Ola Olson Arkaas" in the USA, along with his wife Sigrid, is that... MAYBE they were living with one of their married daughters, either with with Berith or with Sigrid - and I have no idea who/when/where they married.

Perhaps they moved far away, perhaps they stayed in Waupaca County or maybe Portage County.

Then there is also the first son, the elder brother of Knud & Arne, presumably named Ole.
Maybe this older brother did NOT emigrate?

In the book FROM THE INDIAN LAND, the parents of Knud and Arne are definitely mentioned:

This is such a huge webpage, that I access it through the TEXT-ONLY version in the Google Cache.

Jane,
These records give you more facts about the Olsen´s from Arkoset.

Ole Olsen Woldene´s confirmation record from Sandsvær April 29. 1849, nr 37
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=1098&idx_id=1098&uid=ny&idx_side=-225

The family leaves Voldene in Gransherad in Kongsberg, Ole and Siri/Sigri and 3 of the children, Arne, Berith and Siri, nr 90-91-92-93-94, Knud and Ole was likely employed on another farm.

The record is from1854, but in front it´s written 4-5 years ago, the correct year they left Vollene was 1849: From Hierdal/Hjartdal under Kongsberg, Dest. Sandsvær.
The next starting with: "12th November som 6th Søndag....." I am not sure about the meaning of this, 1848 is also mentioned.
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=1100&idx_id=1100&uid=ny&idx_side=-320

It was as a matter of fact this on I ment, moving to Sandsvær and Arkoset 1849, but since some translations was done I´ll keep it even it has been shown abowe.

Utflyttede/Moved 1855
Nr 1-2-3-4-5 1849, Ole Olsen Woldene age 55, Siri age 52 etc.
"for at ta over pladsen Gaaserudeie eller Arkoset" To take over the cotters place Gaaserudeie or Arkoset. Kongsberg - Arkoset

More records when you are going to visit US records Jane.

Berthe Olsdatter Arkoset age 25 emigrated March 25. 1866, right page nr 19:
Halvor MartInius Hansen Brenda, age 25, March 25. nr 18 and Ole Olsen Bagstevold age 35, nr 16, seems likely to have been her companions.
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=1127&idx_id=1127&uid=ny&idx_side=-299

This is the closest I can get to Arkoset online, the picture of a local cross -county skiier is taken from Arkoset at the pond at lake Mykle where the farm was.

Next is to enter "Gransheradsoga" and Vollene.

My goodness, Kare - you keep outdoing yourself. I'm flabbergasted.

I hope you've been giving some thought to what I can send you from America, as a special gift for all the time, energy and EXPERTISE you've devoted to this.

I think that Arkoset might have represented an earthly Eden/Heaven for anyone employed in an industrial age silver mine - maybe the land was poor, but wouldn't there have been lots of fish in the lake? Maybe?

Yes Arkoset was a garden of Eden even it was hard to get an income there, but in the wilderness fishing from several lakes and hunting and Ole selling tools made of wood made all five children grow up.

Jane, genealogy is a hobby for me, and if I at the same time can help others finding their forefathers i am happy with that. Of cource, locals when I know where the farms are are special interesting.

Enter http://kart.finn.no/ and write " ble sportskapell" press "søk", zoom 2 times minus and watch "fuglemyra" at lake Buvatnet , navigate south of m in myra at the "yellow" road, zoom in and watch Vollan. Fugl=bird and myra =bog.

I´ll take a look up in "Gransheradsoge" for you tomorrow.
There are 28 boys from Kongsberg and Sandsvær listed as soldiers in the Civil War.

Jane, from "Gransheradsoga" p. 616.
Voldene/ Volland in Gransherad in Øvre (Upper) Jondalen in Kongsberg parish. The land was cleared about 1750, and the first farmers we know about was Ole Gunnulfsen and Sigrid Arnesdatter.

The writer don´t know where Ole was born, also his brother Stener lived as a neighbour and was godfather to at least two of Ole and Sigrid´s children.
( I havn´t been able to find Sigri Arnesdr´s birth-record either)
The farm was a cotters place under Rua-Baklia.

Ole Olsen Woldene was born Oct. 11. 1800, top right page. He was son of Ole Gunnulfsen Myra / Lofthuus / Voldene b. a. 1771- dead before 1835 and Sigrid Arnesdatter b. a. 1771- dead 1842

Ole´s godparents: Kari Hellichsdr Aaspelund, Bent Paulsen Bjørndalen, Knud Olsen Rønningen, Stener Gunnulvsen Lofthuus, Gulbrand Olsen Kasa.
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=8574&idx_id=8574&uid=ny&idx_side=-51

Her is Ole age 1 in 1801 on farm Løkemoen in 1865 census with his parents and two sisters, Kari b 1794 and Marthe b 1796.
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=4&filnamn=f10827&gardpostnr=178&personpostnr=2204#nedre

Kari Olsdr b. 11/10 Oct. 11. 1794 on farm Myra (Bog), right page, nr 3 from bottom. Ole Gunnulvsen Myra /Løkemoen /Vollene. Myra is a neighbour farm to Vollene, today.
Myra is a camping and a cafe, named Max kro today.
Kari´s godparents: Guri Arnesdr, Gørand Arnesdr, Bent Olsen, Ole Arnesen, Stener Gunulvsen
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=8573&idx_id=8573&uid=ny&idx_side=-190

Kari married Anders Biring from Kongsberg, they had one son, Ole, born 1827.

The youngest of the siblings was Marthe b. 1801 married to Ole Olsen Helleberg, one son also born 1827 named Ole. Marthe died 1846, and the probateregister show she was rather wealthy.

Page 657 "Gransheradsoga"

When Ole Gunnulvsen left Løkemoen he settled down on Vollene.
Both the new owner on Løkemoen Jon Gulbrandsen and Ole Gunnulvsen was known as two hotheads often using clenched fists to sort out disagreemnts and quarrels.

The reason for the enmity between them we don´t know, but one night Ole Gunnulvsen was on his way back home to Vollene he was attaced by Jon Gulbrandsen and his father Gulbrand, and they threatened to tear Ole into sevaral pieces wherever they met again. Ole took them to court and the consiliation was that Jon schould look after Ole as long as he lived.

Ole Gunnulvsen and Sigri Arnesdr also got a son Gunnulf who died young 1809.
bottom right page:
29. Juli Ole Gunnulfsen Woldene
Døbt paa Rua (Bap on Rua) Gunnulf
gl:23 uger /age: 23 weeks
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=8574&idx_id=8574&uid=ny&idx_side=-329

Because of this record we do know that Ole died between 1809-35, if his death record could be found it was likely written where he was born, but no luck so fare. (some of the pages is hard to read becaus of either bad ink or water -damage)

1835: Widow Sigri Arnesdatter and her DIL Siri Knudsdr didn´t get well together, and a consiliation was set up on Sauland vicorage and achievement between them was the result of this meeting .

Sigri Arnesdr died Nov. 20. 1842, right page 2. from bottom:
48 Sigri Arnesdr. Enke efter Husm. Ole Gunnolvsen Woldene 20- nov. 3_desmb. 70 aar.

Correcting a wrong conclusion in Sandsværs Historie:
In the 1865 census from Sandsvær Ole Olsen lived alone on Arkoset as a tenant farmer and it´s written that his wife was taken care of by the welfare agency, she wasn´t, she lived with her son Ole on farm Økter in Gjerpen (next to Siljan) parish in Telemark.
When Ole married 1860 he was living as a free farmer on Økter in Luxefjeld in Gjerpen.

He had two children, Martin age 5 and Ole age 2, the census show his mother Sigrid age 63 living there. She was born in Flesberg municipality in Numedal next to Gransherad in Kongsberg.
It seems Ole was doing well, he had two male emplyeed from Sandsvær working on the farm.
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=177&filnamn=f60812&gardpostnr=295&merk=295#ovre

The family moved later to farm Nordkvelmoen in Hedrum in Vestfold County where he died 1891.

Jane,
Ancestry.com recently added scanned plat books to their collection and I found an 1889 plat book of Waupaca County on there and I can see where both K. O. Arkosa and A. O. Arkosa lived. Knut had 120 acres at the time, in a very beautiful area just south of Scandinavia. I know that area, because my sister has a close friend that lives just down the road from where Knut's farm would have been. He even had what I believe to be the Little Wolf River running through his property.

A. O. Arkosa had 10 acres and lived northwest of Scandinavia. He also had a river or creek running through his land.

If you have access to Ancestry. com, this is the link. http://content.ancestry.com/Browse/view.aspx?dbid=1127&path=Wisconsin.Waupaca%2c+1889.14

If you are interested in this, please e-mail me. Just click on my name and it will take you to the page, where you can send me a short message.
Take care, Wanda

Continuing Svene records:
Knud Arnesen Haugen under Lofthus age 40 in 1801 census was son of Arne Tollevsen age 64,owner of Haugen and married 3. time to Berit Nilsdatter. Knud was married to Live Olsdr and Siri had 2 siblings, Ole age 4 and Berte age 1. Also Lives sister Anne age 13 worked as a maid.

Both Knud and his father Arne worked as miners for the Silver Company owned by the king, likely in the norhern part of the silver mine area named Vinoren opened about 1730 (Kongsberg Sølv-gruver 1624-1957).
