Hello,

I have a question that maybe there is somebody who can help. I have some family who emigrated from Christiania on May 3, 1850 and arrived in NY on July 14, 1850. I am curious to know where their home was in Norway, other than this record I don't know anything about them. I think they may have come from Ostre Toten in Oppland but not sure if that is correct, or which parish.

Here is the information:

Passenger list 1850 - brig Incognito
Captain S. Christophersen
Departure Christiania May 3
Arrival New York July 14
Ship: Incognito
Source Roll # 90, arr. no. 782

http://www.norwayheritage.com/p_list.asp?jo=885

68 Hans Evensen Bakke 51 m Steerage
69 Martha Hansdatter 36 f Steerage
70 Marthe Gunda Hansdatter 14 f Steerage
71 Even Hansen 16 m Steerage
72 Anders Hansen 11 m Steerage
73 Erick Hansen 9 mo m Steerage
74 Martha Marie !! 9 f Steerage
75 Christiana !! 5 f Steerage
76 Andrine !! 9 mo f Steerage

Thank you again for any help!
Mike Peterson

Some of the Toten church records are available online, Martha’s baptism record and maybe Han’s confirmation record:

http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_fylke=5&idx_kilde=Alle&idx_periode=&idx_textsearch=&js=j

These church records are all available on microfilm for rental at a local Family History Center. www.familysearch.org

Here is the Bakke farm, Toten, Oppland, Norway in the 1801 census:

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=hentglobal®ister=gardsnavn&pgj=71&teljing=ft1801&filnamn=f10528.wc2&amt=5&funnenr=437

Here is the Bakke farm, Ĝstre Toten, Oppland in the 1865 census:

There are six people who are listed as look up volunteers for Toten:

Dear All -

This is such great information I don't know where to begin to look! I am going to give all the digital parish registers a try and see what I can find. You have no clue how helpful everyone has been in aiding me in my search!

Hans Evensen was born in Biri in Oppland about 1799 on farm Ambiĝr in Snertingdalen (dalen=walley).

This must be Hans in the 1801 census Biri, son of Even Eriksen, farmer, age 24 and Gunnil Marita Hansdatter age 26 and his 4 year old brother Erik.
Next coming: Nils and Randine is his father´s siblings and Ragnil Anderedatter is his father´s granmother and prior owner of the farm

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=6&filnamn=f10525&gardpostnr=101&personpostnr=2504&merk=2504#ovre

Farm Bakke is also in Snertingdalen. The connection between Hans Evensen and Bakke is likely from one of his parents.

Ole Hansen age 46 is farmer on Bakke in 1801

Hi Kċre,

I was also looking through the census! Thanks again! Hans and his wife lived on Bakke Farm in Hoff too because I found my gg-grandmother on the birth record (Marthea Gunda). This information is terrific, I hope I can fill in all the gaps! I never thought I'd have so much on my family!!

You are right about farm Bakke.
I guess all municipalities has one or sevaral farms named Bakke or Bakken in Norway. It tells you that the location of the farm was in a hillside.

Search LSD for Even Eriksen birth 1777 and you will get his father Erich Erichsen and mother Agnete Nielsdatter. Searching for Niels Eriksen birth 1785 proves this.
Look also up Ragnild Andersdatter marriage 1745 and you will find that Erich Jensen was the grandfather and that Anders and Siri was Ragnilds parents.
Looking up Evens father by Erich Erichsen birth 1754 gives you some proofs - not the year of marriage maybe - unless they married five years after Even was born.
By looking up Erich Jensen birth 1721 you will get his parents and Erich Erichsens siblings.

Mike,
Even Bakke sponsored several of my family in coming to the USA from Toten in the 1890's.
I tried to send you a direct answer but the system wouldn't let me do so.
Please get in touch, I've been looking for Even's relatives for a long time.
