Yes I have seen and saved the birth record for Jens. Like you I do not see Jensie on the 1930 census and here is another mystery: Hannah Hage listed as MIL in St Paul MN home of daughter Selma Schottmüller as married. Hannah is also listed in Sig’s home in Buena Vista Iowa as a widow. Jensie’s Church record for 1932 funeral biblio record misstates he was born in Kristiansand but actual record clearly says Skudenes. Age on that record is correct so that must be ‘our’ Jens death record. The notes from Stella Hage, Sig’s daughter gave same date or a day earlier for Jens’ demise. I believe Jens & Hannah lived with Sig in St Paul. Jens shows up in St Paul directory on same street Hewitt in the 1920s.
I volunteer at the Sutro Libray in SF so if you need anything looked up there, gimme holler. |

You call someone "Sig". You mean Sigmund, son of Jens, rather than Sigurd, son of Jakob Andreas from my branch of the family? Nicknames can be confusing. I'd choose to try to avoid them.
The two 1930 census enumerations both including Hannah were taken several weeks apart. We also don't know how completely the enumerator explained any specifics of who was to be included. Also, the person answering the census questions was not necessarily the member of the family who would have known the correct answers... there is no penalty for wrong answers on a census.
I'm starting to wonder if Jens was hospitalized or under some other type of care not at home. Wouldn't it be wonderful to find a long wordy obituary which told about his life and situation shortly before his death? Got access to any old archive of Mpls/St Paul newspapers? I've already checked online at "Access Newspaper Archive". |

Hopkins & fellow travelers, it's been a minute. Recalling that Hopkins hoped to find a juicy obit for Jens Hage, shared below is what I've found over the past few years. MNHS.org has newer and better searchability for newpapers in MN. There is even a "clip" and link to goggle translate for idiots like me who have zero comprehension of Norwegian language. Herein we discover a juicy Golden Wedding anniversary party for Jens and Johanna dated 1926. Page 11, Column 3, top under "St Paul". Summary: Golden Anniversary at the Schottmuller home in St Paul, lots of gifts and flowers, greetings from family and friends read, songs, and according to goggletranslate:
"The venerable Couple are both fresh, able-bodied and interested in Tidens Questions. Mr. and Mrs. Hage were both born in 1851 in Skudesneshavn and is confirmed on the same day in Skudesnes Church and married in the same Church in 1876. They came to America in 1882 and have been farming in Alta, in Clay County, and Buena Vista Co., Ia. For 15 years they have lived in St. Paul, until now, for some years they have managed The home of Son Sigmond Hage, Vestyr of the Farmerforretningen in Bode, Jowa. The other Son is Prosecutor P. Hage, St. Paul, and then there are the daughters Lilly Wellmerling, Selma Schottmuller, both in St. Paul, and Marie Norton, Minot, N.D." https://www.mnhs.org/newspapers/lccn/sn83045534/1926-05-27/ed-1/seq-11

I was pinged on Ancestry by a descendent of Salve Hage named Håkon living in Skudeneshavn who asked to see my tree pics of Jens Hage. My reply directed Håkon towards the ancestory user from whom I saved the photo of a photo of a photo of Salve Hage.
My Jens Hage tree pics are mostly screen grabs plus one pic of a pic of Salve Hage from an ancestry user. Long ago, 2006, Hopkins posted he was in contact with an American cousin holding the archive of many unidentified/unknown Norwegians.
Does anyone know how to contact the owner of this photo archive? As a librarian seeking to understand provenance and sources; As a cousin seeking to quench curiosity. Has anyone heard from Hopkins lately? |
