Hello to all; I am searching for the ships name and the date of arival of the Gehrls family in 1880, from Germany. My GGGrandfather, Hans Gehrls, born 24 Jul 1831, Germany, wife Sophie (Torber) Gehrls born <1831>, and family, also with him was my GGrandfather Friedrich (Fred) Gehrls. They lived in Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany. Ship may have been from the Hamburg-America Line. The port of departure may have been Hamburg, Germany, and port was New York. They had arrived in the USA in 1880. They moved to Warren, Minnesota, USA. If you don't have any info., tell me how I can find their information. Thank You, Rodney |

You could conduct a search through the lists of passengers listed as arriving through the port of New York in 1880. Microfilm copies of those records are available for use through US National Archives and/or the LDS Family History Library network of centers.
I think I've heard of some German lists kept of persons leaving through Hamburg - but I'm not sure of that. You might check that through any German history/genealogy discussion list.
There is a book entitled "They Came In Ships" that might be helpful for you to read. Good luck. |

The majority, I believe, of German and Polish immigrants came through the Port of Baltimore as that was where the German shipping companies had established routes.
Only the Hamburg passenger/exit lists remain, if they emigrated from Bremen or another German port, there are no lists, mostly destroyed in World War II.
Ancestry.com has all the Hamburg passenger lists available online on a subscription basis. Only 1890-1913 have been indexed. Any other searching is done one list at a time so you have to know the ship name and when they arrived in the U.S. to go searching and even then it is really a tedious process.
If you just Google "Hamburg Passenger Lists", a lot of information will come up.

Hi Rodney,
I was just wondering where you got the emigration dates? Also, I don't have the "World Deluxe" membership with Ancestry.com, but I do see them listed in the Mecklenburg-Schwerin 1867 census. Have you seen that? The index for that lists him as being born in 1815. It may not be the same Hans and Sophie Gehrls in Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany, but just wanted to point that out to you. They also could of made a mistake on the date of birth. I didn't find them in the U.S. census, so was wondering if they may have used a different name. If this is of no help, then please check with the German genealogy sites as mentioned.
Good luck, Wanda |

Hi Lislcat- I don't know about birth 24 Jul 1813, I show 24 Jul 1831, they may have made an error, as the chances of a Hans and Sophie Gehrls would be slim. Freidrich (Fred) Gehrls was found in the US census for 1910. 1920, and 1930, in Warren, Minnestota, and states Fred said emigration was 1880 from Grambow district of Ritteramt Gadebusck, in the Mecklenburg-Schwerin district of Germany. They were in the 1867 census which showed them living in this region, now know as Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany. Here is the deal, a week ago, after some searching, I had discovered my lost Gehrls relatives living in Warren, Minnesota. Iris Kisch, and Doris Hoper are two Family members, and once I had contacted them, they wanted to know if I knew more about Hans Gehrls in Germany. How would I look for the 1868 census in Germany, is there a web-site? If I can get a copie of this, I may find more clues of my family there. Please help me, I am not good at this Genealogy stuff, and most the time, I'm over my head, and thats why I had joined this forum, for help. Thank You for reading, Rodney |

P.S. Lislcat, I have not seen the 1867 census from Mecklenburg-Schwerin, could you tell me how to get it, or an attachment or something. Thank You, Rodney |

Thank You Hopkins, I will search these sites. In the begining, I was mostly searching for 4 Finnish sea Captains, and got off track with other research as well, and I apologize for this. My Hasting famlies roots reach far back in time, Robert De Hastings b. 1562, d. 1634, Wales-He was a Marshall, and De Normandie I De Longu Epee No, b. 0923, d. 0943 Norway. I just wanted to find information about my mother's side of the family, Nyberg and Gehrls. This site is to professional for me to keep up with, this is my last post-Thank you all for the help you have given me, Rodney |

Rodney, Please check with your local library to see if they have a subscription to Ancestry.com. I hate to think that you're giving up on this, because of comments on here, as per an e-mail from you. You sure have managed to get back farther in Norway than I have and asking questions is never a bad thing, it's just that this is a Norway genealogy site.
I hope you're able to find a good German genealogy site to work with. I did notice from the US Census that many Gehrls settled in the Saginaw, Michigan area, but you may already know this. I wish you continued success. Take care, Wanda |
