I have searched numerous resources and cannot find the emigration / immigration of Johannes Johannessen Kamphaug(h). He was born 20 Jun 1827 in Grue, Hedmark and died 12 Jun 1912 in Hatton, Traill County, North Dakota. (I DO have the emigration and immigration records of his wife and children, who traveled in 1872.)
According to documents, such as the Hatton Diamond Jubilee Book, Johannes immigrated in 1867. The 1880 census has the entire family living in Northwood, Grand Forks County, Dakota Territory.
I looked through parish records for Grue / Brandvals, in search of the family's migration from Hedmark - and found nothing. I have searched departures from Kristiania and came up blank. I searched for Johannes in Norway Heritage for his arrival in NY and came up blank.
Any assistance is GREATLY appreciated! Have a nice day! Clark in Japan |

Konnichiwa. In 1867, the most likely port of arrival for Norwegians would probably be Quebec.

ps: Always a good idea to put up links to other queries, so that people don't search in vain... |

Based on the info from "other queries" and the likelyhood that Johannes Johannesen actually is Johannes Johansen - he can be found by this name in the LDS records christened Sept 25 1825 in Brandval. His parents are Johan Henriksen and Inger Johannesdatter. In the 1865 census Inger is a Føderaads-kone living with the family of her son Halvor Johansen - one of his children is named Julius - Johannes also has a son Julius - must have been an important name to keep in the family. Unfortunately scanned records are not available for Brandval in order to get proof of this. |

Well, I can confirm that Oline & the children arrived at the Port of New York from Bergen on July 1, 1872 aboard the Steamer St. Olaf. From Norway, steerage. Page 13 of 14 of the passenger list.
Unfortunately, the Bergen emigration records do not begin until 1874.
Without reading through all the posts on Rootsweb, did anyone find him in the 1870 census? While husbands many times went ahead of their families, five years seems an unusually long time to be separated.

Thanks to everyone for your responses. Jo Anne, I have a copy of Olia & children's arrival in NY... good confirmation. 'eibache', Johannes has been found using 'Johan Johanson' as well as Johannes J. Kamphaugh... and probably others not yet found. The one you found in LDS is NOT my man. Johannes was born 20 Jun 1827 to Johannes Adolfsen Kamphaugh and Inger Olsdatter Helgenaeset. I have some of his history in Norway. What I cannot find is his departure from Hedmark and his arrival in the USA (or Canada). I DO have 1880, 1900 & 1910 census reports. I do NOT have him in the 1870 census. He should have been in / around Decorah, Iowa at that time. Hopkins, your finds confirm what I already have in that area. And, Jan, your point is well taken. I will keep links in mind in my future postings. It looks like QUEBEC immigration is where I need to refocus my attention. To all, MANGE TUSEN TAKK! And to Jan Peter, DOMO ARIGATO GOZAIMASU! Have a nice day! Clark in Japan |
