I'm new to this forum and hope someone can help. I am searching for my great-grandfather. I don't believe he ever emmigrated to USA. I've hit a brick wall. My grandfather was named Ole Tornelius Sandvold in USA. b. jun 8 1877 d. sep3 1936. from what little family history I have his father was Torres Olson from Sandhordland married to Margrete- no last name. Ole was married 1906 to Marie Holmedal b. jul 3 1880 d. jan 24 1884 (43?) Marie's father's name was Lars Torresm Sandvik - her mother's name was Johanne Torbjorsdtr. Holmedal. - Marie is listed as being from Holmedal, utaker is listed also-- (is this a parish name?, Hordland. I have found by searching on Digatalkivet -- Ole Tornelius listed as first name, Torressen as middle name, Sandvold as last name., age 16, 1877, Skonevig, ug, badgers son ( is this baker's son?) shipped via Thingvalla 6-7-1893, sailed from Bergen. Farm #10 (Sandvold). I'm assuming this is the correct Ole - my grandfather. I'm interest in finding my great-grandfather information and whether my grandfather Ole had any brothers or sisters. (Is it possible I have the wrong Ole and need to look other than Hordland?) Sorry this is so long but wanted to give you as much info as possible. Thanks for any help yuo can give me!

Ole Sandvold in Story Co. IA in 1900 US census. Listed as born June 1877, immigrated 1893. In Minneapolis for the 1910 US census? if yes, then lists immigration as 1896.
Let's include URL of that record you mention - Emigration from the port of Bergen on or about 6 Jul 1893 - Sandvold emigration That record clarifies that he was from Skånevik (Skaanevik), Hordaland and may have been travelling with others from that area. Quite a few Norwegians from Skånevik ended up in the Story Co. area.
He's born too late for the 1875 census and left Norway before the 1900 census. Sandvold farm(s) were located in Holmedal parish of Skånevik.
There are a few databases extracted for the area on Digitalarkivet - Baptismal record for Olai Tornelius -- Døypte i Skånevik
Excellent church records and a pretty good bygdebok set is available for Skånevik. Start your study under LINKS (upper right above) and more can probably be provided. YOU study!
P.S. Your "brick wall" just turned into a paper bag. |

He emmigrated in in 1893 at age 16 was born in 1877 before the sisters. Possibly for some reason he was not with his family at the time of the census and was on another Sandvold farm.?? |

Ole/Olai's mother came from the neighboring district of Fjelberg (west of Skånevik). (LOTS of people from Fjelberg settled in Story Co. IA)
1865 census - Margarethe's family
They are living on a small subsection of the Handeland farm in Fjelberg. The bygdebok for Fjelberg spells that small plot as Holo while the census spells it as Haalen. Margethe's father has several earlier generations which lived on the Handeland farm in Fjelberg (at least three generations).

Yes, I think we have it correct.! My grandfather did come to Story County, Iowa first as I remember now. Then he came to Freeborn County, Minnesota settled there and had a HUGE farm in the town of Bath. So Serrine and Anna must have been his sisters. Now I will have to research them. Then more searching with bydebok.
You have all been SO HELPFUL!!!

I don't know which link you refer to when you say quote: I'm not sure if this is it - as it does not show my grandfatgher Ole as a son for them???
Can you please clarify that?

The quote was a reply to Kaarto and the link she first gave me. At first I thought it must have been incorrect as it did not show my grandfather Ole as being a son. I just reviewed the link that Kaarto showed and now I see that it also shows Seri Knusdet. Sandvold year 1816. It has the following letters Fl (?), e (?), Spending (?) -- what do these abbreviations stand for and who might she be? |

The census link that Kåre (Norwegian masculine name) gave was for the 1900 census. Your Ole/Olai had left for the US before that date.
The old widow Seri Knudsdatter would be somehow related to the family -but that is not specified further in the census. You'll probably learn that as you do further research. I also have a few early ancestors from Skånevik - but it is not an area that I'm expert in and I don't have any great resources in my own possession. Other than what is online - I recommend the collection of the LDS Family History Library.
Keep studying those 'how-to' articles that I recommended. You'll find translations to help with the various censuses and their headings and common abbreviations used, parish records, etc. http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/articles.html

It became late last night, waking up this morning watching all the correct info. you have been getting during the night from Hopkins and Einar.
Here is a map showing Kvinnherad where Ole´s mother was born, the southern part Hordaland County at Hardangerfjorden. Skånevik (Skåneviksjøen) is south of Kvinnherad, next to Åkra and Holmedal. http://www.rootsweb.com/~norway/hordaland.html
The closest you can get to pronounce Tørres in English is Toerres.
Seri Knudsdatter Sandvold born 1826, from the 1900 cencus: HL means she was a renter and related to the family, but her possison/connection we don´t know.
Many takes Kåre for a femmale name, I am used to it and it bring up a broad smile, Kåre Is an old Norse name.
