Clark,
Did the marriage papers say when Karen immigrated? That could help to make sure we have the right Karen.
If they didn't move, we should be able to find them.

Or a birthdate for Karen Larson Hanson? It's tough when they live so close to the state line, because they could of ended up moving to another county or state. If I remember right, when helping Liv with some of the other Hanson's, they did tend to move around a bit, ie...Iowa, South Dakota, North Dakota.
If we can't find them in the census, then maybe church records would be the answer. Also, finding the cemetery where they are buried would help. They don't have plat maps for Traill County listed on Ancestry. They have them for the surrounding counties, but most of them aren't until around 1910 or later.
Clark - I have family that just visited Toyko and loved it! They live in Shen Zhen, China and we hope to be visiting them in the next two years. It would be next year, but we're going to Norway and Denmark next year. :)
Take care, Wanda |

Liv and Clark,
I followed Tobias Tjornhom (minister) and he lived in Fergus Fall, Otter Tail County Minnesota for both the 1900 US Census and the 1905 Minnesota census. In the 1905 census, he has 7 children and Caren Larson is listed as his housekeeper. In 1920, they are married and I believe the youngest three children are hers. In the 1905 Minnesota census, she is listed as being single. I just don't think that this is the right Karen Larson. This is where a birthdate for Karen Larson would help, because this Caren/Karen would of been born abt 1876.

Karen who was m. to Tobias Tjornholms must be another, because she was born 1876, then she had been 7 year old at the marriage with Karelius..... Karen and Larsen was very usually names here in Norway but I will look at the Norway emigr.

I read through the list of residents on the 1900 US census for Garfield Township, Traill County, ND and didn't find Karelius and Karen Hanson. I'm looking in the areas where his siblings resided, Sargent County and Ward County. Maybe he and his wife moved further west. I don't find any sign of him in the North Dakota death records. Either he died shortly after they were married and she remarried, so it would be very hard to find her or they moved and he isn't using Karelius as his first name, which is also going to make it very difficult.
Have you found any obits for any of the Hanson's that might list if he is still alive at their death or where he might live? That could really help a lot.

Hei!
I know just that Karelius' brother Hans Hanson and his wife Alberta lived in Garfield township, ND, but I have no obits or what church they were buried. I'm not sure how many church it was in Garfield/Hatton when they died. Hans died 24.10. 1940 and his wife died 28.01.1923 in Hatton.

I think you should consider having a cemetery look-up done for Traill County. I found only one cemetery listed for Garfield Township - Eilson Norwegian Cemetery, aka St. John. That doesn't mean that he's buried in Garfield Township, but that's the last place that we know he was located.
Here's some more information.
Traill County, ND Cemetery Transcriptions - Index, Volume 5
Cemetery Inscription Index, Volume 5, Cemeteries of North Dakota, published by the Red River Valley Genealogy Society (RRVGS). This index scanned and reformatted by Garnett J. Zsedeny with permission.
For lookups of cemeteries and death dates write the RRVGS at Box 9284, Fargo, North Dakota 58106-9284, Ph:(701)239-4129, rrvgs@fargocity.com. Send $2.00 for each name or each page along with an SASE. The complete volume may be purchased from the RRVGS.
List of surnames and pages in the index. Here are the Hansen's and Hanson's.
HANSEN 18, 24-25, 79, 126 128 HANSON 3, 7, 9#151;10,19-21 25-30, 33, 35, 38, 41, 58 59#151;61, 63#151;65, 67, 73, 75 77, 79, 95-96,106, 110 124-126,129-131,141 145,148,153,160,167 168-170,176,178,180 183,186,193
If you have someone in that area, they may be able to contact these people and get it done a lot quicker. This is just a suggestion.
Take care, Wanda

Hi Liv,
I hope they can help you. I think if you just send them an e-mail and mention that you're from Norway, they will tell you if Karelius Hanson is listed in the Cemetery Inscription list for Traill County. They may also be able to tell you where to look or who to contact, if they don't find him in Traill county.
Good luck! I almost feel like I know the family that you're searching for, as well as I do my own. Please keep us informed.
Take care, Wanda |

Here is the obit for Hans Hanson, Karelius' older brother, who died on 25 October 1940. It leaves one to believe that Karelius has already passed away. ----- Hatton News - H. Hanson Rites Held on Tuesday Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon from the St. Johns Lutheran church for Hans Hanson, pioneer settler of the Hatton community. He had not been well for several years and during the past year had been confined to his bed. He passed away at the home of his son, John Hanson, last Thursday evening.
Mr. Hanson was born in Kongsvinger, Norway, on April 18, 1854 and came to the United States in 1872, settling at Northwood, Iowa. In January, 1877 he was married to Alberta Johnson and two years later they came to North Dakota and homesteaded three miles east of Hatton. In 1913 they moved into town and made their home. Mrs. Hanson passed away in January 1923. during the past many years Mr. Hanson had made his home with a son and daughter-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. John Hanson of this city. Twelve children were born to this union, five of whom have passed away. He leaves to mourn his passing seven children, John, Eddie, and Willie, all of Hatton, Albert of Finley, Ole of Alameda, Sask., Canada, Mrs. P.O. Evenson (Clara) of Kampton, Mrs. Alfred Peterson (Ida) of Denver, Colo., one brother Andrew Hanson at Kongsvinger, Norway. He also leaves 38 grandchildren, and 57 great-grandchildren. Active pallbearers were Argyle Pladson, Walter Hanson, Ervin Evenson, Harry Hanson, Oral Hanson, and Ernest Hanson. Honorary pallbearers were H. E. Sander, G.L. Thompson, Ed O. Harmon, Grim Grimson, Anton Nelson and Andrew Teie. ----- Additionally, family notes indicate that, when Hans, his family, and other settlers left Iowa, they stopped in Fergus Falls (due to flooding), and stayed there for about one year. Hans rented during that time, before moving on to Hatton. Some settlers stayed in Fergus. Hans went back to Fergus for about one year (1879-80?), before returning to Hatton. ----- Regarding the marriage certificate for Karelius & Karen, there are no birth dates, immigration dates..... nothing. ----- St. John's cemetery is at the church IN Hatton. The Carl Ben Eilsen cemetery is about one mile out of town. So, Wanda, when are YOU coming to Tokyo? ;-)) Have a nice day! Clark in Japan |

Clark,
That obit is just full of information. We know that Karelius had passed away by 1940, but I suspect he passed away a lot earlier. The St. John's cemetery is listed in the Traill County section of USGENWEB as being the same cemetery as Eilsen. They only listed one for Garfield Township, so hopefully the historical society will be able to tell Liv if he is buried in either of those cemeteries.
How did you get the obit from the Hatton News? Did they have that on-line or did you request it from a library? That's something that Liv could try too!
As for visiting Tokyo, I'd love to! My family is going to be in Shen Zhen, China for at least 3 years and when we're able to visit them, we plan to make stops in Japan and a couple of other places, hopefully. They like Shen Zhen fine, but enjoy traveling to the different countries in the area. They've been to Japan, Vietnam and Singapore. My brother lived in Japan with his family during the Vietnam War and they really liked it there. I've never been to that part of the world, only the Soviet Union (before the wall came down), Yugoslavia and Estonia, plus some Caribbean islands and Canada. There's so much I'd like to see, but Norway is at the top of my list! :) Summer of 2008!
Take care, Wanda |

Hei Clark and Wanda!
I'm sitting in Norway and is looking and looking at the computer, but where did Karelius and Karen take the way? I wonder!
I have contact with the RRVGS and waits for answer, I hope I can get some interesting from them soon.
I found some at the Larsen cemetery, Lincoln, SD, it was one Karen Larsen there, but no date about her. Can be another Karen.

Hi Liv,
It's very baffling, I agree! I think Karelius probably died shortly after getting married, so we aren't finding them in the US or Dakota censuses and Karen probably remarried, so we wouldn't find her using the name Larson or Hanson. I hope they can give you information at the RRVGS. Also, trying to find an obituary for Karelius Hanson might help. Maybe the RRVGS also knows where you could find his obituary.
Next Monday, is Labor Day, a National Holiday here in the US, so many people go on vacation this week to take advantage of the long weekend and a last chance to get away before school starts. Don't be surprised if you don't hear anything right away.
We'll find out what happened to him, it will just not be as easy as finding some of your other Hanson's.
Take care, Wanda |

Wanda, Han Hanson's obit was passed down to me from one of my sisters, who found it years ago (maybe passed down from Grandma Hanson. As for the St. John's cemetery, I must have had one of my 'senior moments'....... ;-) Clark in Japan |
