I've been attempting to locate some information on my great grandfather and great grandmother who were both born in Norway and emigrated to the US (date unknown).

Ingwald Simpson
b. 1879 in Norway
d. 1927 in Concord, MA

Martha Nelson
b. 1879 in Norway
d. 25 Jun 1951 in Concord, MA

Martha had 3 brothers (Claude b. 1882, Nick b. 1886 and Martin b. 1892).

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Arthur Floyde

Spelling: In Norway we don't use the letter "W", and Simpson isn't a Norwegian surname at all. If you search at this web page or at GOOGLE you'll find a lot about naming traditions in Norway and how the names was changed in the USA. I can try to search more for this Ingvald I found. I'll also try other look ups in the US to confirm imigr. date.

I found him in US Census 1900 too:
1900 United States Federal Census
about Ingvald Simmerson
Name: Ingvald Simmerson
Home in 1900: Acton, Middlesex, Massachusetts
Age: 34
Estimated birth year: abt 1866
Birthplace: Norway
Relationship to head-of-house: Servant
Race: White
Occupation: View image
Immigration Year: 1892
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
James Meckklesus 43
Martha Meckklesus 39
Henry Meckklesus 11
Ada M Meckklesus 8
Ingvald Simmerson 34

This Census has noted imigration year as 1892, so it looks like it had to be about that time.

The image is hard to read. Could you or someone else open it and see if you can read his birth year and month? If we have that info it's easier to find the right Ingvald in Norway.

I'm most interested in the emigration record from the port of Oslo/Kristinia. That record lists Ingvald Simens(en) as having previously resided in Norderhov (in Buskerud) and most likely born 1877.
In the Norderhov parish records of 1877 - Ingvald born 28 March 1877 to Simen Hansen and wife Mathea Halvorsdtr -
Norderhov baptism 1877
The date numbers inserted just below the parents names MIGHT be reference to their own births and perhaps the third indicates their year of marriage? Yes, a marriage entry in Norderhov, Buskerud -
Norderhov marriage 1876

Thank you very much for all the information you've provided. I am not proficient in the Norwegian language or the naming traditions. Would you have any additional information on Simen Hansen and wife Mathea Halvorsdtr and if Ingvald had any brothers and/or sisters?

Fine Hopkins!

I have put a message on a Norwegian web page hoping someone can do a look up at NOrderhov "Bygdebooks".

And I'll keep on looking for other Ingvald S. as emigrants.

looking at the 1900 image the bit\rth month can be March, but I can't read the year.
Hopkins; will you please take a look too??

Arhur; if you go to a library you may get a paper copy or a microfilm with a better quality than the image.

I did already look at that page of the 1900 US census. The scanned copy is illegible, but the final letter of the month MIGHT be an "r"? So no, I can't help you with that.
I agree that it is possible that an original or microfilm copy MIGHT have captured a better image. It sure couldn't be much worse.

Arthur -
I don't speak Norwegian either - don't let that stop you.

There is lots of information online to help you with your understanding of the Norwegian naming patterns/traditions.
Those Norwegian names (this website)
Norwegian naming practices (by Follesdal)
Norwegian Naming Practices (by Oldevoll)
Norwegian Naming Patterns (by Borgos)

I have no further information about the parents and/or siblings of the baptised child that I earlier gave links to. I'm sure additional information is available to you - but you can learn how to find it. There are also many online articles about reading and using the Norwegian source records.

You can study about how-to use the Norwegian church/parish records in this article.
Ancestors From Norway - Parish records
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/na20.html
That wonderful article was written about 2002 and since that time scanned copies of many of the Norwegian parish records have been put online. All the advice in the article about how to use them, including translations of the column headings of Norwegian Parish records, is still as valid and useful with the online scanned copies.

The Digitalarkivet web site has been adding scanned images of the original Norwegian parish church records for anyone with Internet access since November 2005. They are planning that this project of adding the records may be finished by the end of the year 2007. More records are added every week.

The Digitalarkivet web site - http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebFront.exe?slag=vis&tekst=meldingar
An English option is available by clicking on that word from either the left hand column or the blue link bar along the bottom of the homepage.
The scanned images are available from the homepage link "Skanna kyrkjebøker" [Norwegian version]/"Digitised parish records" [English version] which is listed along the left hand column and from the blue banner of links along the top section of the homepage.
After you've clicked on that link and a new main page has presented on the screen be sure and read the instructions that are available from the Digitalarkivet for navigating the scanned records. The instructions are available in Bokmål (official Norwegian), Nyorsk (Norwegian), Davvisámegiella (Saami), and English.
Recommended basic reading are the "Startsiden" [Norwegian version]/"Main page" [English version], "Brukerveiledning" [Norwegian version]/"User's guide" [English version] and "Om tjenesten" [Norwegian version]/"About this service" [English version].

Hi All,

I just looked at the 1900 Census and I believe it says "Mch" for the birth month. If you look at the rest of the page, the census taker uses Mch for March, instead of Mar. A bit unusual, but their own method, I guess. Over 10 years difference in age is interesting.

Also worth mentioning, in the 1910 Census, it lists "Fingwald" and Martha as being married 7 years, so you know that their wedding took place abt 1903.

Good luck. Wanda

Wanda;

Yes; i also think I can read "Mch"! I'm not so familar to the English language so when i read it first time I didn't think about that possiblity at all.
Still no prooof - but maybe a little closer.

Another info: I haven't found any "better" Ingvald S. emigrating Norway!

Getting closer!!

Look here:
World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918
about Inguald Simpson
Name: Inguald Simpson
City: Woburn
County: Middlesex
State: Massachusetts
Birth Date: 28 Mar 1878
Race: White
Roll: 1684685
DraftBoard: 29

The date of birth is noted as 28 Mar 18878 at the image too.
Ingvald Simensen from Norderhov, Norway was born 28 Mar 1877 (scanned image from Church Records)

Did'nt he know his year of birth? Was it noted wrong at the WW1 card? Or is it "wrong man"??

Arthur: Get his Deatrh Certificate and have a look at the noted birth date!

By the way: Arriving Boston:

Boston Passenger Lists, 1820-1943
about Yengarl Simenson
Name: Yengarl Simenson
Arrival Date: 22 Aug 1892
Age: 15 Years
Estimated birth year: abt 1877
Gender: Male
Port of Departure: Liverpool, England
Ship Name: Samaria
Port of Arrival: Boston, Massachusetts
Last Residence: Sweden
Microfilm Roll Number: 3

NOTICE: Last residence Sweden IS WRONG: "My" Ingvald left the port of Oslo on August 5th 1892.. Also notice his age is noted (at the image too) 15 years. (1877)
I am 100% sure Ingvald leaving Oslo = "Yengarl" arriving Boston.
I am 99 % sure Ingvald Simensen=Ingwald Simpson.
