I have also found a passport app for James, dated 1923, going to Norway. He is not on the 1925 census, his son George is, with family and cousin Michael Hoveland, son of Pedar (Peter) Hoveland living with the family. Ido know that Michael is a cousin to George. I can't find however when Mike came over to the USA for sure. |

THAT is the piece of information that finally solves it. It DID hinge on additional research in American sources.
Michael Hoveland appears in the 1920 US federal census for Wright Co. Iowa (same page as George) - that lists an approximate birthyear and an immigration year and makes it clear that he should still be in Norway for the 1900 census there.
The 1900 Norwegian census shows him living in Oslo/Kristiania with his father, Peder Hovland, mother and several siblings. That Norwegian census shows Peder's birthplace. Peder Hovland houshold 1900
Peder is listed as born in 1857 and therefore should appear as a child in the 1865 Norwegian census with his family. Jørgen Paulsen household 1865 The family lives on the Hofland indre farm in Finaas, Hordaland, Norway. The younger brother listed there, Jens Jakob Jørgensen, is the person who later became known as James Hoveland in Wright Co. Iowa.
The actual birth/baptismal record of Jens Jakob in the Bømlo parish, Finnås, Hordaland church records (see record #15 on the page) lists his birth as 5 May 1863, baptism on 25 May 1863. Jens Jakob's birth/baptismal record
Jørgen Paulsen, the father of Jens Jakob and Peder, died in Finaas in 1883 - Dead ni Bømlo parish, Finnås
You'll research in the records of Finaas, Hordaland, Norway for earlier generations of that ancestral line.

Michael Antonio Hovland (17y 7m) arrived at Ellis Island on Apr 10, 1903, with the ship Hellig Olav.
Together with him was his niece Katharine Svendsen (17y 4m) and nephew Karl Christian Svendsen (24y 4m) Their destination was uncle James Hovland in Kanawha, Iowa, as was Michael's destination.

That Marithe Andersdtr age at next birthday is 10, so she would have been born about 1792.. Which would make her a little on the old side to marry Paul. It is possible!

It is possible - BUT that would be a dangerous thing to assume and enter into a geneaology record as if it were a definite fact. Her marriage record could very well list the name of her father and/or the name of Finaas farm that she lived on. Check for more evidence.
That girl's name (and close spelling variations) is fairly common in the area - so be careful.

A correction to Jens Jakob Hovland's father, Jørgen Paulsen (born 10 Feb 1824):
Jørgen's father is Paul Aadnesen.
Paul Aadnesen & Marithe Andersdr Marriage: 14 JUN 1812, Finnas, Hordaland
Look in the "Forretningerne" coloumn at the right page. To the left of the christening of "Helgie", is the marriage details of Poul Aadnesen and Marithe Andersdr Hovland.

Here is the marriage record for Jorgen and Maren. Entry #36, and I think the date is 6 October 1849. Need help with all the names. Could give us a chance for the 1801 census.
I guess Jørgen Paulsen Ungkarl born at Hovland i Bømmel and Pigen Maren Jacobi Nielsdatter is clear - so would Jørgens father Paul Aadnesen be. Marens father was Niels Peter Ørbek, Smed og Inderst paa Espeland. |
