So when looking at the record of the children, the first date is their birthdate and the second their baptism date? or vice versa? and clear to the right, what does all that say? Some I can make out if clear, then on some it all runs together! I have a norwegian translation page up to translate now as I navigate!

In that earlier recommended collection of 'how-to' articles you'll find one that helps translate the formats of the Norwegian church record formats for various time periods.

Cici,

I have been able to put togather quite a listing of your Hovland relatives. They seemed somewhat easy to find, and they didn't appear to move around very much. I used your family as an exercise in trying to become more proficient in reading the parish records.

I will include in this post, brothers and sisters of James Jacob Hovland, and some possible close relatives. If you would like to receive my other findings, click on my forum name, and send me an e-mail.

1. Anne Kathrina Karoline Svensdtr birth record born 22 November, 1885. Mother is Martha Kristine Jørgensdtr born 1849. (Next Entry) Anne immigrated with James Jacob Hovland and Michael Antonia Hovland. Michael and Anne have different parents. I haven't found Michael's parents yet.

Three lines above is a Rasmus Hovland. Another relative.

I also see on line 706:
Marithe Andersdtr
Would that be Jorgen Paulsen's Mother?? and her family?

I guess this was not really confirmed. In the 1865 census "Marta" (same as Marithe) was 76 years old - she was living with her oldest son Anders at the Hovland farm where she (Marithe) in 1801 was 10 years old - she must have been Jørgen Paulsens mother.
In the 1801 census her husband to be Poul Aadnesen was 12 years old and living on Lønningsnes farm - same as when he married Marithe in 1812.
Marithe and Pouls son Anders was born at Lønningsnes farm 1813 - his baptism at home was confirmed in church on April 20.
Marithe was baptized Oct 10 1790, her father was Anders Poulsen, Hovland, see right hand page the 6th record from the top here
From the 1801 census you found her mother Helga Nielsdatter in her 2nd marriage. Anders Poulsen must have died around 1795.

Poul Aadnesen was born in 1788 and baptized Oct 12 see right hand page the 12th from the top here
the father was Aadne Lønningsnes, i.e Aadne Johnsen from the 1801 census, mother being Anna Sieursdatter (Sjursdatter)

Einar corrected me on this.

Michel Hovlands had a daughter, Sigri babtized 17 December 1765.

Since there was no middle name, would he be an original from the Hovland farm system?

I found Michel Hovlandsd? born 17 September 1765. Is she an original descendant of the Hovland farm name?

1st page, about half way down.

Here is a marriage of Jørgen Jørgensen Kallevog to Lisbeth Andersdtr Hovland. Dom: 9.p. tr. 1768. She is probably a daughter of Aadne Lønningsnes (Johnson). And this is where Jørgen Paulsen got his fist name.

2nd page, 10 lines down.

Thanks for the corrections Einar. There is a connection here someplace, as Jørgen Jørgensen appears in a lot of the Hovland weddings. borths as a goddparent.

Lester,
If I am not mistaken you refer to the entry for 17 september 1765 when Michel Hovlands daughter Sigri was baptized, in other words Michel Hovland is not a "she".
Regarding Jørgen Jørgensens marriage:
he was living at the Kallevog farm and he married Lisbeth Andersdatter (not Aadnesdatter) from Hovland.

My great great grandmother Berta Kristine Asbjørnsdtr married Jens Jakob Hovland 21 feb 1925 in Haugesund. He was a farer from Iowa, born 5 may 1865. They had no children. I think they lived in a part of Stavanger called Hinna. When James died Berta moved back to Haugesund. My aunt think James died then she was about 6 years old, so it should be about 1833.
I think my mother or aunt got some photos (I will check it.) Send me an email einar@sklbb.no.
