My great grand parents on my maternal grandfathers side came from Norway between 1863 and 1890.
My grandfather was Byron Sabey, was born in Chicago in 1890. His father was Christian Sabey from Bergen. He had several brothers, one was Lewis Sabey who eventually became a doctor (went to Johns Hopkins) and wound up in Paia, Maui, Hawaii. I cannot locate information about him or any other person in Norway with that last name.
Christian's wife was Beatta Kruge from the Larvik area. She had no siblings. Her parents were Anton Olaf Kruge and Beatta Hoff Kruge born about 1830 in the Larvik area. They were married in Larvik. Here too, I am striking out in finding the family in Norway.
If anone can help I would be most appreciative.
Sincerely,

Byron Peterson

1880 US census for Jefferson, Cook Co., Illinois shows Christian Sabey to be 28 yrs old, born in Norway, occupation musician?.
Wife Bertha is 22 yrs old, born Norway. Daughter Esther is 1 year old, born Illinois.
Mother-in-law Bertha "Cruga" is 54 yrs old, born Norway.

1900 US census for Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois lists Christian "Sadey" as born Feb 1852 Norway, married 12 years, immigrated 1864, occupation millwright.
Wife "Beata" born Aug 1857 Norway, immigrated 1872, mother of 7 children - 5 still surviving.
5 Illinois children still living in the household.

Lewis Sabey in Wailuku, Maui, Hawaii in 1900 census. Listed as born 1856, immigrated to Hawaii 1897, occupation doctor.
Wife born in Ohio, married for 13 years, and 12 year old oldest daughter born in California.

The dates in the censuses for births and immigration can be vital to possibly finding their origins in Norway.

It looks like seaman Anton(Olsen) Kruge returned to Larvik after the civil war and stayed there for a periode.

His wife Betea Kruge Hoff was born in Oslo, and all three children were born in Larvik.

His mother was widow Maren Cecilie born Ekersberg in Tønsberg, owner of the house where they lived, Anton´s father was shipmaster Ole Anunsen Kruge.

Thomine age 32 and Anna age 22 were his sisters.

Four person with last name Hoff did also live in the same house, relatives?

The 1880 US census lists the doctor brother as Louis S. Sabey, 23 yrs old, born Norway living in San Francisco, California.

In Chicago 1880 in the same house an Anton Sabey and his young family lives a 62 year old Samuel Sabey (perhaps the father of all these brothers).

If any of the family left Norway after 1865 it is possible they might be found in that Norwegian census database. You've probably researched US census information about each of them - please inform if one of them left Norway after 1865, if yes - who? When born? when immigrated to US?

Those are interesting!
If this Samuel Anfindsen Saebye is the same as the Samuel Sabey in Chicago Illinois for the 1880 US census then I think he is in a second marriage. His wife Sarah does appear too young to have been the mother of any of the Norway born sons.
1880 Chicago

I checked Myklebust and Sæbø farm histories in Kvinnherad and Fjelberg for any noticeable Anfin/Arnfin or Clement/Klement names - did not find.

I'm quite positive this is the right family.

Christian Sabey = Christian Samuelsen Saebye, born 13 Feb 1851, Bergen, Hordaland.
Lewis Sabey = Ludvig Andreas Samuelsen Saebye, born 25 Jan 1856, Bergen, Hordaland.
Anton Sabey = Anton Cornelius Samuelsen Saebye, born 16 Dec 1846, Bergen, Hordaland.
Samuel Sabey = Samuel Anfindsen Saebye (their father).

Samuel Anfindsen Sæbøe (26) & Marie Clemetsdr Møklebust (28)
Marriage: 26 Oct 1846, Askvoll, Sogn Og Fjordane
Link
His father: Anfind Nilsen
Her father: Clemet Sjursen

Samuel Anfindsen
Christening: 07 Feb 1820, Vik I Sogn, Sogn Og Fjordane
Parents: Anfind Nielsen & Kari Samuelsdr

Mari Clemetsdr
Christening: 19 SEP 1818, Askvoll, Sogn Og Fjordane
Parents: Clemet Sjursen & Lovisa Jachobsdr

The Sæbøe name is probably from this farm in Vik i Sogn, Sogn og Fjordane. Widow Kari Samuelsdr living there is Samuel Anfindsen's mother.

The Møklebust name is probably from this farm in Hyllestad, Sogn og Fjordane. Søren Clemetsen living there is a brother of Mari Clemetsdr.

Jan Peter - I agree about the "Sabey" family. That was another area close to Bergen well worth the time to check. Well done.

Worth a try.
If Jens Hoff´s father was Peder Hoff it could be:

Born Feb. 11, christened March 10. 1802 in Vang, parents: Peder Hoff and Margrete Broch Klokkergården.
1802 # 5 from top

Wang Klokkergård 1801, Peder Hoff "Klokker og gaardbeboer" Sexton and occupant of the recidence, his wife Margrete and two daughters, 4 servants and renters.

I don't think Magdalene Hoff nee Petersen (50), born Kjerdeminde on the Fyn island in Denmark is the mother of Beate..., she is too young, only 9 yrs older.

I think Jens must have been married before, and that Beate is his daughter from his first marriage.
