I am looking for information on my great-grandfather Andrew A. Bagstad. Here is what I know. He was born 19 Jun 1847 in Hedemarken and died 18 Feb 1935 in Lyle, Mower Co., MN. He was born Anderson ( son of Anders A.Bagstad b. 1808 in Norway d. 1896 in Mower Co., MN and Anna A. Bagstad b. 1820 in Norway d. 1909 in Mower Co.,MN) { information taken off of tombstone}, came to America as an Anderson and changed his name to Bagstad to be the same as his siblings and show his relationship to them as a family member. Stories from my father state the Andrew as a young man worked for a farmer and had to take the cattle up in the mountains at springtime for grazing and remained there till fall when he would return to the farm. He was given some clothes and food when he left but primarily had to live off the land and was allowed some milk from a fresh cow as long as he did not deprive the calf.
The 1920 Federal Census states he left Norway for America in 1870. His wife Anna A. Anderson came to America in 1861. She was b. 07 Nov 1855 in Sagn, Norway d. 07 Jul 1925 Mower, Co., MN.

I have asked Jan Wiborg to attach a photo of a trunk I sent him which has been in the Bagstad family. I am attempting to link it to the family and see where this trunk leads me. Any information I can get will truly be appreciated.

Gene

1865 Norwegian census shows the brother Teodor/Theodore who later also appears in Mower Co. Minnesota.

The IGI on LDS website familysearch.org shows that someone has submitted that the father and son were born "Walset, , Hedmark".
The names are not completely accurate but perhaps this database record points to the origin of the "Walset" -
Outgoing from Romedal

We are always warned that information from submissions to such collections as the IGI must be carefully verified.

Thank you Jan Peter for posting the photo for me. I wasn't quite sure how to do it and knew you would have no problems. What does the inscription on the trunk tell us? Do you think this trunk came from the Anders Bagstad side or the Anne Petersdtr side? What does the"78" mean and what is " Fiosne f2" mean? Would you be so kind as the translate the marriage record #20?

No problem.

Could the trunk read Andrea Andersdatter 18 Fiosne 42?

And could the farm be Fjøsne?

You can find Fjøsne farms in Luster, Sogn og Fjordane and Etne, Hordaland

Andrea Andersdatter would normally be confirmed at the age of 15 and the trunk could have been a gift for this occation. Her parents were Anders Olsen and Kari Andersdatter at Fjøsne, see #63

The Brig Normand would be the only choice for Anna in 1860. The ship carried around 220 passengers from Sogn and Valders. (Morgenbladet, May 21 1860) The ship left Bergen May 12 and arrived Quebec June 22

Anna Olsdatter Fjøsne is born 07 Nov 1855, ie the trunk belonged to Andrew A. Bagstad's mother-in-law!

Andrea is actually confirmed in 1841.

Her mother is listed as Kari Arnesdatter.

Is this Andrew A. Bagstad & wife Anna A. Anderson (Anna Olsdatter Fjøsne) in census-1880 for Lodi, Mower, Minnesota?
