My friend's family immigrated to New York, USA around 1879 and used the last name Skelson. I do not have the father's name and have hit a road block. Would like to know what name do you think Skelson may have been originally?

There must be possible to get more info than just "around 1879 and used the last name Skelson". Anybody who manage with this info must be "a Master of the trade"!

Do you have any hints or clues of him/her being of Norwegian descent?

Skelson could be a British name. One Frances Skelson b. 1838 immigrated in 1884 from England.

Actually, I found the link. When they came to America Askildsen was changed to Askelson, then to just Skelson. I guess I am a Master of the Trade since I found it =0)

On the census info I had for New York, the birthplace of the father was Norway. I could not find exactly when they immigrated because of the name change. Then with perseverance and broader searches I found the missing link.

Thank you for responding.

These are the choices for Askild* for the 1865 census. A first name and age would help.

Could it be Alfred Skelson you are looking for?

Census-1920 for Richmond, New York:
Alfred Skelson, b ab 1880 in Norway, immigrated ab 1879
Cecelia Skelson, b 1887
Lawrence Skelson, b 1905
Alfred Skelson, b 1908
Loretta Skelson, b 1910

Martin Skelson, b 1894 (brother to Alfred, born in New York?)
Anna Skelson, b 1896
Martin Skelson, b 1915
Catherine Skelson, b 1917
Frances Skelson, b 1919

Cenus-1900 for Richmond, New York:
(Immigration year listed as 1886)
Lawrence Kelson, b 1854
Clara Kelson , b 1853
Alfred Kelson , b 1880
Louis Kelson , b 1889
Martin Kelson , b 1892
Emma Kelson , b 1895
Matilda Kelson , b 1898

Alfred's parents looks to be (americanized) Lawrence & Clara Kelson.

The 1900 US census shows an Alfred A. Kelson living in Manhattan, New York, New York. Listed as born in Norway May 1872 and immigrated to US in 1893. Wife's name appears to be Theresa?

Thanks for your help. Actually I was looking for Martin Skelson whose father was Lars Askildson/Askelson(Lawrence Kelson in 1900). I looked under Alfred (the older brother of Martin) and found the missing links. Thanks for everyone's help. I would not have found the Kelson connection though, because I was so happy and flabbergasted by the Askelson/Askildson find!

Thanks again!
