Hi

I am looking for Karen Marie Jensdatter or Jensen born April 28 1846 in Bingen, Norway.
Her parents were: Jens Lagesen and Ingeborg Pedersdatter.

She left Norway June 10 1881 with the ship "Rollo". I think that ship sailed only to Hull so she had to continue with another. She was not married. Her final destination was Hudson. This is everything we know.

Two other passengers had the same destination:
- Gullik Gulliksen born about 1860 and
- Anne Thorvaldsen born about 1864.
They have no other interest to me than as a help to locate Karen.

Is there any detectives out there who can find her in ship lists, censuses, marriage- or death records -- anything at all?

You sound like you've already seen the ships list -- but you didn't mention the port...

This website indicates that the ship 'Rollo' worked between Christiania/Oslo and Hull in 1884. (At the top left of the front page you just type in Rollo and follow the links to see more about it's route etc.)

So then search the emigration databases for Kristiania and/or Oslo at the Digitalarkivet website. Info to use -- Last name starts with 'Jen', first name starts with 'Kar', age should be about 34-35 years old, on ship 'Rollo', etc. etc. Perfectly simple -- you could have found it.
Leaving from Kristiania/Oslo on or about 10 June 1881.
Rollo leaves 10 Jun 1881

That emigration record lists that her home place was in 'Eker'. That is probably indicating Eiker, Buskerud area. So 1865 census should be checked for her also at Digitalarkivet website.
Again -- Last name starts with 'Jen', first name starts with 'Kar', age should be about 19-20 years old, Again simple --
Eiker farm called Thorberg in 1865

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~norway/DigitalArchives.html

The church records for Eiker, Buskerud are available for your use to find records of birth, baptism, confirmation, etc. Start of course with the birth/baptism for Karen which will list her parents and birthplace farm.

The Digitalarkivet web site has been adding scanned images of the original Norwegian parish church records for anyone with Internet access since November 2005.

The Digitalarkivet web site - http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebFront.exe?slag=vis&tekst=meldingar
An English option is available by clicking on that word from either the left hand column or the blue link bar along the bottom of the homepage.
The scanned images are available from the homepage link "Skanna kyrkjebøker" [Norwegian version]/"Digitised parish records" [English version] which is listed along the left hand column and from the blue banner of links along the top section of the homepage.
After you've clicked on that link and a new main page has presented on the screen be sure and read the instructions that are available from the Digitalarkivet for navigating the scanned records. The instructions are available in Bokmål (official Norwegian), Nyorsk (Norwegian), Davvisámegiella (Saami), and English.
Recommended basic reading are the "Startsiden" [Norwegian version]/"Main page" [English version], "Brukerveiledning" [Norwegian version]/"User's guide" [English version] and "Om tjenesten" [Norwegian version]/"About this service" [English version].

Good information about translating the formats of Norwegian parish church records during various time periods, many of the basic terms used and understanding how to use the information should be studied at this web site -
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/na20.html

For her marriage and death record you will of course have to search in the general area of "Hudson". Those are not likely to be in Norwegian archives.

Hi Hopkins

You have done a lot of work here!
I hardly dare tell you: It is what happened to her after she left Norway I am looking for. I don't even know which Hudson she was going to.
I have noticed a Karen Marie Jensen in "Passenger and Immigration lists index" on Ancestry.com. That might give some information, but I am not a subscriber there...

By the way - I am Norwegian.

If you look at the emigration protocol out of Kristiania/Oslo for records listing "Hudson" as part of the planned destination listed 1871-1930 you'll notice that they seem to indicate that the destination was probably Hudson, St. Croix County, Wisconsin.

That would probably be a logical area for you to concentrate your efforts.

1848? She was born 1846. Do you see the original document ? I know there are lots of errors in registers and I guess 8 and 6 can look a bit like eachother.
Does it say anything about her destination?

I don't have access to the original doc, but other people here might have...
1848 might be a calculated year of birth based on the age she gave when she registered on the ship.

One interesting family in 1910-census for Hudson Ward 3, St Croix, Wisconsin:
Ole Michealson 64
Karine Michealson 62 (born ab 1848, immigrated ab 1880)
Anna Michealson 35
Karine Michealson 27
Mra Michealson 24
Edward Lee 22
Oscar Lee 25
Horatis Blaisdell 72

But what looks to be her daughter Anna is born ab 1865, so...?
The girls could be Ole's daughters though, but one of them is named Karine...

Karen's age is clearly written as 33, on the SS Thingvalla manifest. Her nationality is written as Danish.

Ok,
then it's a different Karen M Jensen.

The SS Thingvalla went directly to America from Norway, and was not a feeder ship.
Also, her arrival date was some 15 days too late... Karen Marie should have arrived America around June 25th.

Vivi, did you connect to the Wisconsin vital link Jackie gave you? I happened to follow this link, I typed in Karen Marie Jensen on the index search and entered in the county of St. Croix. A marriage record dated July 1st, 1890 pops up. Clicking the details link then gives you an option to search for possible spouses. Clicking this option popped up the name Peter T Erikson. I do have access to Ancestry.com but not the time to do any follow up at the moment.

Hi

Hopkins, it makes sense that she should have had Hudson in Wisconsin as her destination. She had family not too far away from there.
But how can you find that out from the emigrant lists?

She was 35 years old when she left so she might never have married.

It lists Hudson right on that particular emigrant protocol -- remember this from earlier posting on 12th of June?
Rollo leaves 10 June 1881

Hi

Yes, I noticed that Reisemål is Hudson, but there are many places by the name Hudson.
How can you point this out as Hudson, St. croix, Wisconsin?

Hi Vivi,

I would not just be searching in Wisconsin, since Hudson is on the border with Minnesota and many people immigrated to Wisconsin and then moved west from there. I've seen many destinations listed as either Hudson or Hudson, WI. Many Norwegians settled in western Wisconsin, so I would keep searching in Wisconsin and Minnesota. If you don't find her there, possibly the Dakotas.

Good luck! Wanda
