I am wondering if there is any difference between the last names Rotvald and Rodvald. Is it just a simple change of a letter from Norway to America? My great-great-grandfather's first wife was named Gisken Pederdatter Rotvald, born 1852 and died 1894. I am wondering if any info on her family can be found. They were married around Osakis, MN and I know there were many Rodvald's around this area 100 years ago. As I said they would have been married in the US. I would just like to find out somethings about the Rotvalds/Rodvalds. Thanks! |

Lots of name spellings changed from one side of the ocean to the other, people from many different countries. Most I've worked on were because of pronounciation differences and attempting to maintain some semblance of the original sound with the American spelling habits.
You are indicating that "Gisken Pederdatter Rotvald" was a Rotvald BEFORE she married? or not? She was born in Norway? When immigrated? What other family members lived nearby?
Did you check US censuses for the county where Osakis MN is located? What county is that? Families named Rotvald/Rotvold/Radvald/Radvold? Collect the information about those born in Norway? Names, years born, years immigrated? |

One of the first online sources to check is always the huge databases of the LDS Family History Library (familysearch.org).
Enter a search on that website for Gisken Pedersdatter, born about 1852 in Norway and it responds with an entry which is probably the woman you seek and tells you exactly WHERE in Norway to continue your research -- Meråker, Nord-Trøndelag. Meråker records will often be found with the records of Stjørdal and/or Øvre Stjørdal areas in Nord-Trøndelag.

I would think that your Gisken Pedersdatter Rotvald is #1255 in the 1865 census from Meraaker in Nord-Trøndelag. She was born on the farm Rodvold (also written Rotvold) Jan Peter posted this when I was looking for baptismal record, not easy to find I guess. Gisken Petersdatter was confirmed April 19 1868, see #21 there it is recorded that she was born April 21 at the Rotvold farm and baptized May 30 1852. See #23 she was baptized Isken not Gisken! |

Gisken was a Rodvald BEFORE she was married. Did she have any siblings? Could it be found if her father had any other siblings? There were many Rodvalds in the Osakis area (as I posted before) at least 100 years ago. The Osakis area they lived in was in Todd County. |

Compare the names of the parents and the name of the farm where they lived. Doesn't that answer your question? |

Is it possible Gisken emigrated alone, meaning, the only one from her family? Can it be found if her brother ever came to America? |

I was at a cemetary near Hanks,ND and I found Rodvolds buried there and I am wondering if they could be any relation to Gisken. The father's name was Manus S. Rodvold born: 1870 and died: 1920. And his wife Sarah born: 1879 and died: 1963. There were two others who I assume were children; Jewell D. born: 1905 and died: 1992 and Gladys born: 1906 and died: 1993 |

What kind of efforts did you do yourself, in searching for her brother in the emigrantdatabase? He is quite easy to find...
