Interesting that you would recall this five-year-old search. I wonder if the queriest ever found the death date and place for Carl William Quanbeck.
Published in the Willmar Tribune [Willmar, Minnesota] 06 September 1911 "Cards are out announcing the marriage of Miss Sophia Anderson of Minneapolis who taught the parochial school in Dist. No. 18 last spring to Prof. Carl Quanbeck of the Oak Grove Ladies' Lutheran Seminary at Fargo. --Paynesville Press"
Minnesota marriage index has her as Marie Sophia Anderson
Apparently both Carl and son Warren taught at Lutheran seminaries.
Obituary online for 2009 death of Dagmar Marie Dahl who married Dr. Warren Quanbeck September 12, 1942 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Minneapolis, Hennepin, Minnesota. Dr. Quanbeck taught at Luther Theological Seminary in St. Paul, Ramsey, Minnesota. I have cousins who have mentioned their parents were friends of this couple. Small world.
A discussion of the considerable accomplishments of Warren A. Quanbeck (1917-1979) is found here and includes a photo of him teaching: http://metrolutheran.org/2010/06/lutheran-ambassador-at-large/
We can guess that his father Prof. Carl W. Quanbeck was most likely not involved in the Mafia (as a family story mentioned earlier suggested). The reference to the Mafia sounds like Norwegian-American humor to me. jkmarler's finding re. Carl's money problem at Oak Grove Lutheran Seminary probably holds the key to the truth in the story.

This is interesting. I still have not found a death date/place for this Carl Quanbeck. My only reason for thinking that it makes sense that he was involved in shady dealings is that he seemingly disappeared between 1920 and 1930. I have his wife's obituary and he is not mentioned there. |

Well, if the Charles found in 1930 in California is he, a version of the California death records 1930-1939 is available at familysearch.org as a "browseable" not yet searchable database. Let your fingers do the walkin'! |

I am his great grandson. I am also trying to figure out what happened. His children were Helen, Warren and Lawrence. Helen was my grandma. I am told he went to San Francisco area to file a patent and never returned. My Great Grandma Sophie Quanbeck followed him to San Francisco. His things were still in his hotel room. He had not been back. We never heard from him again. There is a story that someone who resembled Carl Quanbeck knocked on the door and Helen answered. She went to get her mom, but the person disappeared.
My family suspects either he met with an accident or fowl play, or he abandoned the family. If he abandoned the family, the 1930 Census record of a Charles W. Quanbeck seems like a promising lead. My uncle says that He talked with Carl's brother, but that he never saw him again. I would be interested if you find more info. |

I believe the 1905-1939 California death index is a searchable now. Try at familysearch.org
There is a Carl Quanbeck employed as editor of the Gilroy Gazette in 1930 in the Santa Clara county city directory. The Gilroy Gazette merged with a paper called the Gilroy Dispatch. Coincidentally or not there is a Gilroy Dispatch in publication today. Here is their webpage: http://gilroydispatch.com/
In the Minneapolis city directory of 1938 Sophie A Quanbeck is listed as the widow of Carl W. and she is employed as manager of the dining hall at the Augsburg Seminary. Ditto as widow in 1934 city directory.
So-called Regional offices of the US Patent office is a relatively new thing according the Patent Office website:
"When President Obama signed the America Invents Act into law in 2011, we were granted the ability to establish at least three regional offices. The first of the new offices, the Elijah J. McCoy office in Detroit, opened in 2012. Our Rocky Mountain Regional Office in Denver opened in 2014. Our Silicon Valley office opened in San Jose in October 2015, and serves the West Coast region. Our Texas Regional Office opened in Dallas in November 2015 and serves the region across the south and southwestern U.S."
Otherwise the main is now in Alexandria, Virginia. Don't know what things were like historically....
