According to the 1910 census in Volin, Yankton, South Dakota, Nels J. Brakke was born about 1845 and immigrated from Norway in 1866.

I suspect he may be my gg-grandfather (Johannes Johannessen Brakke [John J. Brakke]'s youngest brother, born Niels Johannessen in Ringsaker, Hedmark, Norway on 3 July 1844.

I am not having any luck in finding a ship's record or the Norwegian emigrant record of his departure from Norway. Thank you in advance for any help you can give me in this regard.

He left Ringsaker April 13 1866, see record #88
His mother Elie was a widow in 1865, living on the farm Brække, see 4180

It would be likely that he would have sailed from Oslo/Kristiania. That port did not start registering lists of emigrants sailing until at least 1867. The "leaving the parish" record that Einar links above might be the only record that existed.

Just in case you have not seen his baptismal record it is #73
his parents Johannes Johnsen and Elie Pedersdatter, Brække.
They were married Oct 29 1821, Johannes was then 24 years old, living on Brække and Ehlie was 21 years old, living on Søndre Solberg. See #38
Johannes and his parents and siblings in 1801
and Elie and her parents and the brother in 1801
The baptismal record for Johannes is #900
he was born April 1 1823 and baptized April 20.

Thank you eibache and Hopkins. I had seen this Nels J. Brakke pop up in my American research often, but it took me awhile to actually consider that they were brothers. I am always grateful for your help and education on Norwegian research.
