My Great, great grandfather Ole Helgeson born 1820 in Hadeland, Norway. Father was a Helge Bakken. Ole emigrated to America abt 1854. I have fairly extensive family history from 1854 forward. Looking for birth, family information. Apparently there is conflicting birth information also indicating a Hakedal location? Any information appreciated.

No Ole Helgesen born in Hakedal (Nittedal parish) 1819-1821.
Approx 35 farms named Bakkken in Oppland county, search for Ole quite time consuming!
No Ole Helgesen born on Hadeland (Gran, Jevnaker, Lunner) 1819-1821.
More info would be beneficial.

My apologies! I transposed his death year 1920. Our family records show a birth date of 22 January, 1828. Not long after arriving in Iowa he did assume the surname Bakken. However I do believe that any records in Norway would show him as Ole Helgeson, I've also seen it as Helgesen. The only other information I have is that he emigrated with a brother.

Again I apologize for the incorrect date in original post.

Tom - Did you spend any time yourself checking the birth/baptismal records for the parishes of Hadeland, Oppland or Nittedal (which would include Hakadal), Akershus for a record of your Ole??

http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=755&idx_id=755&uid=ny&idx_side=-84

The Digitalarkivet web site has been adding scanned images of the original Norwegian parish church records for anyone with Internet access since November 2005.

The Digitalarkivet web site - http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebFront.exe?slag=vis&tekst=meldingar
An English option is available by clicking on that word from either the left hand column or the blue link bar along the bottom of the homepage.
The scanned images are available from the homepage link "Skanna kyrkjebøker" [Norwegian version]/"Digitised parish records" [English version] which is listed along the left hand column and from the blue banner of links along the top section of the homepage.
After you've clicked on that link and a new main page has presented on the screen be sure and read the instructions that are available from the Digitalarkivet for navigating the scanned records. The instructions are available in Bokmål (official Norwegian), Nyorsk (Norwegian), Davvisámegiella (Saami), and English.
Recommended basic reading are the "Startsiden" [Norwegian version]/"Main page" [English version], "Brukerveiledning" [Norwegian version]/"User's guide" [English version] and "Om tjenesten" [Norwegian version]/"About this service" [English version].

Good information about translating the formats of Norwegian parish church records during various time periods, many of the basic terms used and understanding how to use the information should be studied at this web site -

One Ole to consider is #9
born Jan 20 1828 in Nittedal parish (which include Hakedal) at the farm Jordbærbakken (Strawberry hill) which could have been changed to Bakken (Hill) .
Parents Helge Olsen and Berthe maria Olsdatter.
No hit in Jevnaker or Gran.

Great thanks to both of you! I am chagrined that I did not know how to do the search myself. Obviously I'm new at this and I appreciate your efforts and the tips on searching.

Oles parents Helge Olsen and Berthe Maria Olsdatter married in Hakedal church Dec. 26 1825, see #1 on right hand page. Helge came from Ensrud in Hadeland and was 24 years old. Berthe Maria came from Nordbye and was 19 1/2 years old.
Helge was baptized Helger Febr 14 1802, his parents were Ole Olsen and Mari Helgesdatter, Ensrud. See the 1801 census
Berthe Maria was a common name in Nittedal/Hakedal, however the one baptized July 21 1805, see #34 parents being Ole Torgersen and Anne Knudsdatter, Søndre Holm is most likely the right one, Her parents and siblings in 1801

I can't thank you enough! I'm doing this for my father's 85 yr old cousin who is the family historian, but not very computer oriented.

I appreciate all the information and tips on searching too. I was able to find some records for my paternal ancestors as well. Great thanks!

Jordbærbakken (Strawberry hill) or Bakken (hill side) in Nittedal can be watched here
Bakken (Jordbærbakken) is the red spot in the map below.
