The township was Kosmos in Renville County. Lots of siblings: Peter age 24, Christine age 23, Mary age 21, Haus age 18, Serdew age 17, Hagrop aage 15, John age 5, Charles age 3 and Hattie age 1. I am assuming that Serdew and Hagrop are named not understood and written incorrectly.

Hi Jan,
I rechecked the census and Kosmos is listed as the town they were living in. Also checked and all of the children were born in Norway except the last two, Charles and Hattie which were born in Minnesota. I should have stated all the information first!

Interesting.... they must have emigrated in 1865-1867...

But, Mary is still alive in census-1880, so I guess that rules out this family as well...?

Is there a way to find this marriage record?

John Hanson & Caroline Sophia Anderson.
Marriage: Sept. 24, 1881.

Possibly in Volga twp, Brookings County, South Dakota.

I will do some more checking. I found two of the children's marriages in Lawrence County but they do not tell much other than their names and ages, no birthdates. If I remember correctly the marriage registers didn't start until later.
I went on the South Dakota site and you can order death certificates but I believe you have to send name and then they send it to you. No way to actually check to see if they have it there. I went and checked different Lawrence County webistes and found no clues to last name of Ike. Will look in other county you mentioned, but the poster might have to try and get in touch with the family mentioned on Ancestry, if she subscribes. John Hanson is going to be hard to find without more information unless a person gets really lucky.

Hi,

Most civil records of marriage in America are held at the county level--county where the marriage license was issued or where marriage was performed.

But another possibility is that they were married in a Norwegian Lutheran church. In Brookings county, the Norwegian population was dense enough to support a Norwegian language newspaper for a time, so undoubtedly have churches as well. ELCA archives in Chicago have all American Lutheran Church parish register microfilm (which includes extant copies of Norwegian Lutheran churches.) It would be some time on the ground. I guess that Brookings is the correct county to look for the marriage as in 1880 John Ike lives there and in 1882 filed his homestead there.

Familysearch for 1880 census for Caroline or Carrie Anderson in Brookings finds only two one aged 4 and not marriageable in 1881 and a single woman named Carrie aged 27 born Norway, niece of the head of the household.

There are a few databases of American marriage records at the digitalarkivet but the ones from South Dakota appear to be for congregations found in Moody county.

Kathy since you have Ancestry you might want to try to look at Minnesota State & Territorial census database for 1875. It might be interesting to see the date when John started using "Ike" for his surname.

Jackie

Hi,
I will try that next. All I found for Ike in Brookings County is a site where they listed deaths. A Otto Ike was born in 1881 and died in 1881 and is buried in First Lutheran Cemetery.
The marriage records in South Dakota do not start until 1905. Will still keep looking.

I found this 1880 Census on Family Search also, I don't know if it is Caroline's family or not but sure looks close. If not can toss it out later.
Township 111 - Brookings - Dakota Territory
Lars Anderson, age 60, born in Norway, farmer
Anna Anderson, wife, age 57, born in Norway
C.L. Anderson, male, age 20, born in Minnesota, working in harness shop
Julius Anderson, age 16, born in Minnesota, works on farm.
Olaff Anderson, age 13, born in MInnesota, at home
Louise Anderson, age 8, born in Minnesota.
I will check the actual record on Ancestry tomorrow and see how it looks. Also will check where Brookings in South Dakota is located.

I have seen John Hansen Ike as John Or Hansen Ike, born (August) 1856 near Oslo, emigrated about 1867 with both parents, his mother died shortly after they settled down in USA.
John could be Johan, could Or be Oskar?
John (Johan) Oskar Hansen Ike.

Ike could be americanized from the Norwegian "Oak" Eg, Eik, Eger etc.

From the 1865 census, Nannestad municipaliy Akershus County:
Johan Hansen age 9 born to Hans Christophersen and Dorthea Hansdatter, Eger school distict.
